QUOTE
A job well done is worth celebrating, but Turkish Airlines say staff went too far when they sacrificed a camel.

To mark the last delivery of 100 aircraft, maintenance workers clubbed together to buy the beast - and then consume it.
Some say camel meat tastes like 'coarse beef'
The sacrifice took place at Istanbul international airport.

"They didn't ask permission," a spokeswoman for the airline told the BBC, adding that the boss of the offending staff had been suspended.

He will remain off work while the incident is investigated.

Camel is eaten in Turkey, while the sacrifice of animals - usually sheep - is performed during the Festival of Sacrifice, marking the prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son when God ordered him to.

"But it wasn't anything to do with that," said Belgin Alisan of Turkish Airlines, which was last week accepted into the Lufthansa-led Star Alliance

"They went too far. We are really quite shocked."

Top-selling daily Hurriyet said 700kg of camel meat had been distributed among the workers.

Ummmmm, well that's a rather strange thing to do... but I see eating Camels is somewhat traditional - but still, sacrificing it over delivery of the 100th aircraft? Lol.

The media seem to be over reacting with this:

If camel is a traditional dish in Turkey then thats no different than myself eating Lamb to celebrate my birthday. Why do they think that this is a big issue?

That is is the issue.. It took place at the airport.. There is a time and a place for this, and an airport, in my opinion is not the place.

Next time they could sacrifice Cyprus to join and to fly to the European Union .

Where as the Turkey-Cyprus problem and them wanting to join the European Union is a different matter, I think it's not a big deal to celebrate a contract with sacrificing a camel. As how I understand it it simply originates from a religious aspect. It is not uncommon to do so on birthdays, weddings or even important business meetings. Different cultures different habbits - I think it is simply the media that is overreacting a bit. Let the workers have a Camel if they do a good job and it mite even improve their work in sense of motivation...

just my 2 cents

yeah i know... i dont get people who are like "oh those insane barbaric pigs".

people in the western world have to accept that their culture isn't the only or "best one"

its a camel. they didnt slay a fellow worker, their HR or CEO. we kill hundreds of thousands of cows every year. killing the camel isn't the problem, especially if they ate it afterwards.

the problem is doing it at the airport, which i agree is a bit much. i wouldn't want to be waiting for a flight and see a camel getting axed right out the window. although i doubt they did it in public...

haha yeah they could, good point... although Cyprus is far from being the only reason why europe doesn't want to accept them in the european union... they need to make a whole lot of changes. for starters, acknowledging the Armenian genocide.

I agree with Niko future pilot. I have no issues at all with different religions using animal sacrifices Just there is a place for this. icon_exclaim.gif

Sacrificing an animal at "concourse A" seems a little inappropriate at this juncture in civilization
