Ok guys and girls i was watching the news a few days ago and i saw something about Nasa shooting a rocket at a comet traveling through outer space just to see if they could hit it anybody know anything about it??

alright since no one seems to be showing any interest in this i went digging and found that this comet wasnt on a course to hit earth but they fired a missile/rocket what ever you wanna call it just to see if they can hit an object in space and its going to hit it on the 4th of july

Yes. The mission is called "Deep Impact", and they sent a kind of satellite to that comet, called Tempel 1. The satellite will do this: it will split in two different parts, one the observer and the other one the"crasher". The obs. will be filming, taking photos... 500km away Tempel 1, while the other one will go directly to the comet at a speed of 37,000km/h. The impact should move the comet's orbit just few milimeters, enough for avoiding any further hit. BTW, this mission has sent to have some feedback in the future.

Hey do you know about "Send a name to a comet". Has anyone from here sent it???
When the impactor will hit the comet the orbiter will be able to detect chemical composition of comet's interior...
