Hi people
First time I've ever created a Topic, apologies if it doesn't turn out right.
Just wondering if any of you experienced pilots and air junkies alike out there believe that there will one day be VTOL commercial aircraft?
I myself do and wonder why this has not been attempted yet on a commercial level, or has it?

Propulsion technology as it is today is the limiting factor. But as new technologies are developed, I do see it as a future endeavor, but long away.

Heavy lift vertical takeoff has been around since the 1940's, in the form of rockets, that is. Obviously not a feasible option now for air breathers and sub-orbital vehicles. Currently, VTOL is limited to the Harriers of the world.

Just a thought, I think that I read somewhere that the Saturn V rocket used 12 tons of propellant per second during the first stage of liftoff. How's that for a fuel bill?

And just think about the enviromental effect...

let's see thats 24000 pounds per second, at the average price of gas 4.00 a gal and a conversion rate of 6.9999 pounds per gallon, thats 3,428 gallons per second.. multiply that by 4 and you get:

13,714 dollars per second...

on an average flight time of 4 hours thats 14,400 seconds for a total price of:

197,481,600 dollars per flight

now

at an average of 200 people per flight, thats

$987,408 per person!

Cold Day in Hell!
rjb4000
haha it would make more than a VTOL jet with rockets lol
Flare
VTOL commercial aircraft are called helicopters

As for VTOL jumbo's, i doubt it.
rjb4000
helicopters arent cheap lol

cessna 172 - 100 h/r

blackhawk - 8,000 h/r
Archangel
wow $8000 per hour. wonder why something like a bell 407 could be like $600 per hour but a blackhawk which may be bigger but not my a huge amount costs as much as you say. hmmm

My Visa Card doesn't go nearly that high, unfortunately. Maybe I'll stick to reading about it.
