I am not panicing about it but I am a little scared. We know that if it mutates then it could be dangerous where I live in the UK. I know it will hit but at least the country is prepared. Lets hope it doesn't kill many worldwide.

Fact: The worst plague in the history of the world was the 1918 influenza pandemic. It killed 50 million people, far more than even the bubonic plague.
Fact: Viral cells mutate to more efficiently attack the cells of their host, causing healthy cells to become clones of the viral cells.
Fact: Most viral infections in humans were first transported by birds.
The scare over the Avian or Bird flu is that it is highly contagious, mutates more readily than other viruses, and has progressed in its evolutionary cycle far faster than any virus studied in the past 75 years. It has the potential to make the 1918 flu epidemic look like the sniffles.
BUT, most viruses run into a natural enemy in their evolution cycle and never make the jump to a purely human contagion. Let's hope that this virus will do just that.

why should i be afraid of that disease. but to think it very thoroughly, i think we must be careful enough isn't it but anyway, since theres no reported case of bird flu here in our country its a big NO for me to be scared. :D

As we all know the contagious Bird Flu is spread through Asia and now parts of Europe. President Bush says also that we are not ready for a pandemic like this so that would make me scared but you know I would get a vaccine shot RIGHT AWAY!

Well, I see the value of Donald Rumsfeld's stock in Gilead (company that owns the rights to Tamiflu) go up over this.

Yeah, I am sure he is the only one that owns stock in that company

I voted that i was scared of the bird flu as i think it is a matter of time before it arrives in Britain..maybe not this year nor the next but i feel it is inevitable and the government do too here in Scotlland as they have started shooting teal and mallards down by the river Forth and are testing them for the virus...not that they think for one minute that these birds could be contaminated as they fly in from a different direction but i suppose there is just a chance of cross infection...and you just cannot take any chances..

Very informative, thank you ! I was actually thinking how the Airlines ( in the USA) can't afford another catastrophe as this one could be but then, I slapped myself and realize that we are talking about potentially millions of lives lost to this Avian disease and a bunch of Toulouse, Seattle, Sao Paulo Planes not flying will be the least of our problems.

Well nature has a way of killing off some of the less fit people in this world and this may just be one of them. Or it could be one of those biblical things that has to happen before the world ends. As for now i will let people go get their vaccine and as glnflwrs said let the virus mutate and the vaccine is useless just like HIV or the Common Cold, you either get sick or not. As for now just get a gun and shoot any bird that might look sick and grill up a nice steak while doing it.

i'm not sure, but i think that if this virus mutates and becomes dangerous to men, it would apply to all men... i don't think the strongest of all men could fight it off...
i may be wrong
cheers

p.s. my mom is stupidly obsessed by the bird flew, so i'm currently chicken deprived....
i was wondering something... what about cities that have a lot of birds/ pigeons like paris or rome or venice? can those birds get contaminated... that would be pretty horrible...

This bird flu is just over-reaction some common ills affecting mankind. Viral illnesses have been around for a long time, and we're still here. Remember how everyone died from SARS a couple years ago? As far as the flu vaccine helping, it probably won't. These vaccines are to very specific antigens (I believe flu is the 3 most common influenza viral subtypes in a given year). While it will provide some active immunoresistance with elements of cell-mediated immunity, it likely won't help much with specific resistance to the bird flu. If you really want to be scared of health crisis, let's talk about cigarrettes or alcohol abuse....

how about alcoholic smoking birds contaminated with the bird flu?

I really do not know what the answer here is..you cannot kill every bird.. that is not logistically possible..and as was suggested it is nature's way of getting rid of the weak..again going back to the Bible. whether you believe in it or not. foretold...flood, pestilence and fire..was it.? and we have had all three.
