President Bush arrived at Los Angeles today and will be leaving tomorrow morning 10/21/05. Does anyone know where AirForce One is at? I'm not sure if its at LAX or some military base near Santa Barbara. Please post!

id have to say at a military AFB-if AF1 landed at LAX, it would cause considerable traffic delays and re-routings so thats pretty slim to none. my guess would be at an AFB

It was at LAX, parked on the west ramp at the stand alone gates. It did cause up to hour delays for some flights. Thanks W. icon_rolleyes.gif

Los Angeles AFB is 2 blocks from LAX, and I think the president has priority over any airline. Not only that, but Bush himself is not in charge of where and when AF1 goes. It's not the end of the world, LAX can deal with it

Tell that to the thousands of tax payers that were inconvenienced due to delays as a result of AF 1 and it was not limited to LAX either. If El Al can fly in every day with their tight security, what exactly is the reason that such delays are needed for the security of AF1??? As far as air traffic is concerned, I just don't see the need to create such a mess. How does that better protect Ws 747? He is a civil servant, after all....how rude.

Sorry, Trixie. You and I disagree on this one. He's the president of the United States and the leader of the free world. Whether the French, you or I like it or not everything, 100%, is centered around security. That applies to when he's on the ground and in the air. And when Condoleza(sp) is president it'll be done the same way. It's just part of the cost of doing business.

The question remains, what exactly are they doing that causes these delays?

Pretty funny, Ranger. I agree with you.

Short of ultra-ridiculous measures, I think the President should receive the best security that can be provided. Granted, there are ways to minimize the inconvenience that others may face, but when it comes down to it, presidential safety comes first.

I'm pretty sure that they - whoever 'they' are - have their reasons for putting AF1 down at LAX. The delay is a bummer though, I'll admit.

Me? I'd be thankful for the extra delay during which I could see AF1 and possibly the President, and failing that, just hang out at the airport and soak in all the aviation. Just me....:D

They have to remove all air traffic from I wanna say a 10NM or 20NM radius of AF1. Think about it....AF1 is a PRIME target. Any enemy who can even attack this plane have just won a huge psychological victory over the Unted States.

It's an Air Force aircraft, they are the ones who choose when and where it goes, not Bush.

The taxpayers that are PAYING for that aircraft AND it's flightcrew AND for the president to be the president....which does involve trips across the US.

Y'all need to get off W's case. The same thing happened under previous presidents. In fact, I remember a story about delays at LAX when William "I did not have sex with that woman" Clinton got a haircut of AF1.

Condi on AF1? Cool!
Ranger
They do clear everything out when the president is on board. But once the airplane is on the ground and he's on his way to whereever he's going, ATC is released and traffic flows.

Yes, our last president (Mr. 'I didn't swallow, but she did') did lock up LAX for, if I remember correctly, 1 1/2 hours during his haircut from one of Hollywood's hair artists. Whatever the hell that is. And when I say locked up, I mean just that. He was onboard the airplane and all traffic movement stopped during his haircut.

Talk about rude.

i agree that some tight security measures are needed, but why didn't they just land it at an Air Force base?
I don't think one man (whoever he may be) is worth delaying one of the busiest airports in the world.
What does this have to do with the Frenchies?
What is the free world? I hear that a lot in cold war movies...
BTW, this is the same for Clinton, i remember when he came to Paris, he wanted to do his "jogging" so they blocked the whole Place de la Concorde, and the lower part of the Champs-Elysées. It's like the center of Paris, so basically a whole part of the city was blocked because he wanted to go for a trot...

id rather have a president who lies about that type of stuff, than a president who lies about weapons of mass destruction; but perhaps we should close this topic before it gets out of hand.

The Secret Service is in charge of the President's security, not the President. Of course he does have some input into the discussion.

I would imagine on of the factors that are considered when selecting an airport is the distance between the airport and his final destination. Landing at a remote airport and then having to convoy 50 miles is less safe and causes as much or more distruption than landing at a closer airport. He could use a helicopter instead, but that will also disrupt air traffic. Either way we lose.

When the President has come here to Memphis AF1 landed at the Memphis airport but the airplane was then parked at the TN Air National Guard facility on the airport. Close to the freeway, fairly close to downtown, and probably the least disruptive choice. On the other hand, I lived in Houston when Bush the First was President. AF1 landed at what used to be Ellington AFB (south of Houston) and then drove into town. He visited frequently and always seemed to want to move around town during rush hour.
