Go to a flying club and ask. The first person who tells you not to bother or who shakes their head in apparent despair - avoid like the plague.
One who tells you without emotion, "you need to do this and then you need to do that, and that, and that etc., probably knows what they are on about.
Try to chat with fellow students, if they don`t wanna chat, then find another one.
Be interested in how people got into flying and what their aspirations are, you will then gleen some good ideas.
Becoming a pilot, is, in itself, a culture, never before experienced by mankind.

WHY I WANT TO BE A PILOT
When I grow up I want to be a pilot because it's a fun job and easy to do. That's why there are so many pilots flying around these days.
Pilots don't need much school. They just have to learn to read numbers so they can read their instruments.
I guess they should be able to read a road map, too.
Pilots should be brave to they won't get scared it it's foggy and they can't see, or if a wing or motor falls off.
Pilots have to have good eyes to see through the clouds, and they can't be afraid of thunder or lightning because they are much closer to them than we are.
The salary pilots make is another thing I like. They make more money than they know what to do with. This is because most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots don't because they know how easy it is.
I hope I don't get airsick because I get carsick and if I get airsick, I couldn't be a pilot and then I would have to go to work.

To me it's not a matter of easy or hard.. Flying is
challenging and sometimes it's more challenging than other times, however the difficulty of the challenge to the pilot depends on skill. That's just the way I look at it.

You do? That's grand, the FAA even wrote a special chapter under 14CFR61 just for you, it is called "voluntary resignation of certificates".
Put your ticket (or tickets, if you went that far) in an envelope, mail in to the Monroney center in Oklahoma, and then you can start your new life of car insurance salesman right away. No questions asked!!!
It is a free service, and from what I heard they have no airmen complaints on the processing of the said certificates into the shredding machine.

Ya know, there are a handful of captains that I have flown with that are so miserable it's pathetic. Yet they cannot quit and go any place else and make the same kind of money with no skills other than being a pilot. They have made their bed, they are going to lie in it...at least until 60.

I'm 14 and a Freshman in HS.
Several years back I visited Seattle Center a few times and stayed as long as they would allow! I agree, it is very cool.
I considered going into ATC- the only reason I didn't is because of the amount of stress you can be under at times. Of course it depends on how busy the location is that you work at... or rather, the location of the airspace you are working. :D
I have a friend who was a controller- I guess there is a test they give you where you they read a bunch of things to you in quick succession and you have to be able to remember all of it and read it back. I don't know how much info it is (how long they talk), but I don't think I could do it.
When I receive a real long detailed clearance from ATC I'm already pretty close to being mentally (memory) maxed out!
If you can do it- I'm certainly not discouraging it!
You wouldn't have to travel like a pilot does!
Just understand what you are getting into, in terms of there being some instances where you are very stressed out. I don't have a clue how often that happens- its not ALL the time (depending on where you work), so don't be discouraged.
What ARTCC did you visit and did they seem to be busy?

Womak is SO right!!
What you kids thinking about stress for at your age???
Stress is something you LEARN about when you are older, it affects everyone all the time - even reading this post is stressful!!
It must certainly not influence your decisions on your career/profession/love of flying/aviation/ATC controller/Engineer at this stage in your life.
Being very uncharacteristically, brief (that means I am able to waffle on for hours) - go forth to your dreams and live the life you have imagined, ok?
IF, if, you choose, flying, as a pilot, or ATC, then you have to go through the training, which is FUN. Everything you do, at school, on the track (Athletics/Sports) even chatting up that little lovely in your class has got a certain amount of stress to it, even crossing a busy and dangerous road.
[ESPECIALLY CROSSING A BUSY AND DANGEROUS ROAD!!!!!]
If that were not the case you would probably not be here now.
Stress, to a certain degree enhances performance, improves circulation, sharpens your awareness and generally sets up the body to its maximum potential. A certain amount of stress is ideal for the physical and mental and even psychological functions of the body, (human or animal, even maybe plants - but I digress)
Look at yourself when you are cheering on your own team at a baseball game or a football game, the thrill of skateboarding or snowboarding or whatever makes you feel great because it has got a certain degree of excitement to it. This is stress, and you are doing it.
There is -ive stress and +ive stress and BOTH help the body to function at its peak.
Too much stress will slightly impair performance, but you will be trained to offset this when doing your Commercial Pilot Training or even your PPL.
Too LITTLE stress and you would not be as sharp or as motivated as you would with the optimum amount of stress.
Your perception of life around you and the things you do combine to make a balanced platform for good old stress. (You must find the balance)
This may take some time.
So we now know that stress is an important part of performance.
If you take on too much stress over a long period of time AND it appears to be too much for you then your body would start to show signs of STRAIN. Strain, is NOT good but is quite curable provided you spot it soon enough, which one always does because you would feel like s--t anyway.
So, what you feel then is your own measure of your own level of stress.
Take a famous pilot on this forum. She pilots a complex aircraft which is more stressful than a jet, because, well it just is, and she has to do it almost every day, apart from days off, under a tight schedule.
So she has the stress of flying this plane which ain't the easiest in the world to fly and the stress of the tight schedules - now there, there must be stress but she thrives on it because it is challenging and she has to stay on top of it and she loves what she is doing and she is very good at it too. There, is LOADS of stress. However, if a day ever came about when all the above was making her feel ill, then she would simply take time off on vacation or whatever, and if this proved permanent then she would consider taking more time off until it was all super cool again.
My point?
You feel good or you feel bad, and you deal with it as it happens, if, if, and when it happens.
You walk down the street and you see the most beautiful girl in the world walking towards you - do you stop and talk to her.. do you just walk by...?
If you stop and she does not wanna know that could embarrass you. If you walk on by, you may have lost the babe of the century - "ping"
stress!
IT, don`t govern you , you govern it.
Your favorite football player, maybe a quarterback, every game, he is under stress, but he does not think, "I am under stress" - no, he is thinking, "...either you catch this ball you son---of--a--minesweeper or we are history..." stress. see?
It is all part and parcel of living normally.
When the time comes, if a job is too stressful for you, you will get help or at the most extreme quit and do something less stressful, like bungee jumping! Or feeding Great White sharks by hand!
Don`t let people fill your head full of rubbish about stress, if you wanna get into aviation, then get into aviation.
Stress, is the problem, for old gits like me!
Like: "where can I get some!!!" lol
If, though, you think you will not be able to handle it, then you know that already, you know it. If you don`t know it then say to yourself "...I can handle it..." If you can`t handle it, then you will be pulled out of training or you will pull yourself out of training. [ After having had a long talk with your instructor/trainer, of course]
BUT YOU WILL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY YOUR EXCELLENT BEST.
(It all STARTS with your thinking)
Forget about stress, it is nothing.

Hi everyone, :D I'm new here and reading your posts inspired me to join and share my ambitions for the future. Im 15 and really want to be a pilot, I have decided I want to take the hard road and pay for all the training etc, and build my way up. My theory is that if you do it this way, it's more satisfying when you get to where you want to be, no matter how long it takes. I'm thinking of trying to get a job at an airport, probably only customer service but working in an airport will be great I think. My ultimate goal is to fly the MIGHTY B-777. Absolutely! I'm 17, and I can proudly say that I've worked my **I have a dirty mouth** off washing airplanes for 3 years. I'm currently a Private Pilot and am working on my Instrument Rating. I do believe the context in which he was stating 'share the sky' was as one professional to another or peer to peer where both take what they do seriously and are proud to do so versus the disgruntled group of pilots that we were discussing.
