Ah well I guess this is a first for me and to think that only about 6 years ago I was terrified to fly. As you know I am off to see my family in Scotland for two weeks. In hindsight I wish I had made it longer but will cost too much to change now.
These are the flight details, although I am told we stop at Singapore for refuelling.The good thing is I do not go to Heathrow. I never enjoyed my experiences there, Far too chaotic and the folk were not that pleasant either.The only bad thing is the departure time.. 2.30 am.. jings what a time, but that is the slot so I have to grin and bear it. I have booked the very back seats as I do not want to be disturbing folk when I go for a wander.The only thing is. I do not think the seat reclines..so maybe not such a good idea after all. I will buy one of those inflatable pillows (just in case).
I will add to this when I get back.

Hi Bluebird, sorry your post is now a million years old. Hey, sorry you had a bad time at Heathrow. It is my second home. If I ever get stuck, I would sooner get stuck there. As I am totally self-opinionated, I`ll (seriously) have a word round and hopefully it might catch on that a bit of warmth and charm would go well, like it did in the late sixties - not that I was around then (I lie). so, I will see what can be done - hey do you know what - they get cheap staff - then they don`t bother to train them!! I don`t blame the staff - I blame management and recruitment - and putting cheap staff into cheap slots - with no training is like buying a chocolate gun but using real bullits. Wish me luck.

There, that may help - now a letter to BAA may just do the trick. Flight Safety is not ALL that needs to be done - you need warmth and compassion too - I DON`T CARE HOW BUSY THEY SAY THEY ARE!!!!

HOWEVER, go to Terminal Five - there is a whole new experience - everybody is nice and professional - why is that I wonder. . . . .hmmmmm ah, I know! Its because they are all foreigners and know how to be NICE and POLITE!!!!! Which is what we should be but we have lost it, that certain je ne sais qua, instead the Brits don`t give a f---k anymore - so long as the salary rolls in and the job gets done. For Gods sake!!!! and then they complain that foreigners are pinching all the jobs, well, aint it all surprising!!!! They are getting all the jobs, because they can do the jobs 4,000 times better!!! Even with an irate pax screaming at you in your face - be nice. We used to be the envy of the world - fine - let the foreigners do the job, seeing as they do it properly, AND CAN BE BOTHERED TO MAKE AN EFFORT AND LOVE PEOPLE instead of being irritated at their mere prescence - `cos thats what this is about isn`t it - you just cannot be bothered.

Scottish, Irish and Northern Irish airports shut by ash

George Best Belfast City airport shut at 1300 BST
Thousands of passengers are facing long delays after airports in Scotland and Ireland closed because of a fresh cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland.

Flights will remain grounded until 0100 BST on Thursday at Glasgow and 0700 BST at Belfast, however Edinburgh re-opened at 1900 BST on Wednesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) advised passengers to check with airports before travelling.

Last month, ash clouds from the same volcano grounded flights for six days.

Air traffic control body Nats said all airfields in Northern Ireland plus Islay, Campbeltown, Ronaldsway, Lands End and the Isles of Scilly would be in the no-fly zone from 0100 BST until 0700 BST on Thursday.

All other UK airfields would be outside the no-fly zone during this period, it added.

A Nats statement said: "Latest Met Office information suggests the cloud will move west overnight.

"Based on this information, we expect most of the airfields to become available again from 0700.

"However, we would caution that the ash cloud is dynamic and continues to change shape and the situation may change again."

Nats will issue a further update at about 0330 BST.

Scottish airports closed by ash
NI is no-fly zone as ash returns
In Scotland, Aberdeen airport has flights arriving and departing as normal, and business resumed at Inverness at 1300 BST.

Edinburgh Airport reopened at 1900 BST with the first flights leaving just minutes later.

Passengers due to fly from the Scottish airport were warned there would still be some disruption through the evening and on Thursday.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said airports in the Republic of Ireland would start to reopen from 0400 BST on Thursday.

The IAA said: "The current ash cloud is moving south westwards and airport restrictions will be lifted according to its progress."

Ryanair has cancelled all flights to and from Belfast, Derry, Edinburgh and Prestwick airports.

But the no-frills airline said it expected all its UK flights to operate on Thursday, although there would be continued disruption in Ireland.

Flybe has cancelled all flights to and from George Best Belfast City, Glasgow and the Isle of Man.

EasyJet flights to and from George Best Belfast City, Belfast International and Glasgow have been cancelled.

There were scenes of confusion at many of the affected airports with airspaces opening and closing at different times throughout the day.

It was the second day of disruption for Northern Ireland and the Republic, with some passengers failing to show up at Belfast's airports even though they were open on Wednesday morning.

About 200 flights take off daily from Glasgow Airport but only 13 departed on Wednesday. Some passengers were taken by bus from the airport to catch flights from other airports.

One of those hit by the disruption was Mabel McGeachie, 62, from East Kilbride, who had been due to fly from Glasgow to Malaga.

She was travelling to Spain with 10 friends and relatives for her daughter's hen night and was told the next available flight was on Sunday - the day she was meant to return.

"We are feeling disappointed as we were looking forward to it and I don't think we'll be able to rearrange it," she said.

Earlier on Wednesday, there were fears the high concentrations of ash could close airspace in north-west England but the area remains outside the no-fly zone.

The CAA said airports in south-east England were unlikely to be affected.

CAA chief executive Andrew Haines said ash would probably "continue to disrupt UK air travel for the foreseeable future".

"Scientists are tracking the cloud's movements constantly but its location changes frequently, depending on the strength of eruptions and prevailing winds," he said.

"When the ash level exceeds that agreed as safe by the industry we have to restrict flights accordingly.

"This decision is not taken lightly and we appreciate the huge inconvenience and disruption this causes to the many people and businesses affected."

BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor said the situation was likely to improve on Thursday.

"For the rest of today the largest concentrations of ash will remain over parts of western Scotland and Ireland," he said.

"However, through tomorrow as winds go more north-easterly the ash cloud is expected to be pushed out over the Atlantic and clear of the UK."

Ian Hall, director of air traffic control body Nats, said they were keeping the situation under review.

"There are glimmers of optimism and hope, but we've been there before," he said.

"The volcano is still erupting, the wind is still blowing from the wrong direction as far as our airspace is concerned, and so long as it does that we'll have to stay on our toes."

Some flights to and from Dublin Airport on Thursday have already been cancelled.

On Tuesday, flights in and out of the Irish Republic, Northern Ireland and Scotland's Hebrides were suspended at the first sign of an increase in volcanic ash levels.

Flights over Europe were banned last month because of fears the volcanic ash could damage plane engines.

The decision to lift the restrictions followed safety tests that showed the engines could cope in areas of low-density ash.

The fresh disruption on Tuesday came as European Union transport ministers met in Brussels to agree measures they hoped would help prevent further disruption to air travel as a result of volcanic ash.

The steps include speeding up current plans to integrate Europe's airspace, creating a "single European regulator for a single European sky".

The meeting came after criticism from the airline industry that governments took an over-cautious approach to April's ash cloud crisis and grounded flights unnecessarily.

Heat camera footage from early on Sunday indicated the temperature in the crater had fallen to just 100C, a leading volcanologist said.

This means Eyjafjallajokull is now producing steam, not magma, he said.

But he warned that it was too early to say whether the eruption was over completely.

Huge ash clouds from the volcano grounded thousands of flights in Europe during the early part of the eruption, and there has been fresh disruption since then.

"What I can confirm is that the activity of the crater has stopped," Magnus Gudmundsson told AFP news agency.

"No magma is coming up."

Iceland's Meteorological Office said eruption activity was "minimal", and Civil Protection Agency official Iris Marelsdottir was quoted by AP news agency as saying the volcano was "quiet".

'Difficult to say'

Mr Gudmundsson said it would be a long time before the eruption, which began on 14 April, could be said with certainty to be over.

He pointed out that the previous eruption at the volcano had lasted 13 months, from 1821-23.

"It stopped and started again several times with different intervals, so it's difficult to say, difficult to give a timeline," he added.

He also judged it impossible to say whether the neighbouring and much larger and fiercer Katla volcano might also erupt.

At the height of its activity, the volcano sent out ash which led to airlines grounding their planes for fear it could interfere with jet engines.

It was the biggest aerial shutdown in Europe since World War II, and affected at least 10 million passengers worldwide.
