Ok, so I was watching a DVD with the Fokker 70, and the F/O explained that they were going to do an auto land and that they needed both autopilots on to do so.

So I'm watching them come into land, and the captain has his hands on the controls and is moving them-I thought that auto land meant "no hands", except for imputing data? icon_question.gif

Autoland is indeed without manual inputs. Nevertheless blind trust in the system ( autopilots) is a dangerous thing. The pilot probably had his hand on to be able to react quickly, if needed. However most autopilots are made to disengage if too much pressure is applied to the controls. Having your hands on very lightly gives you furthermore a direct input on what the autopilot is actually doing.

Good morning,
I'd say it's a very normal way to do an autoland ;) I wouldn't trust autopilot [or even both of them] for a split of a second - just to be sure I can keep autoland from becoming an "autofalling" [perform go-around or land manually].

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. So, how come we only see Embraer or Bombardier regional aircraft, here in the US? In Europe you see them too, but you also see Fokkers, Avro's, etc, so it seems like there's a much greater variety in regional aircraft over there. I know Canada's our biggest trading partner, and we trade a lot with Latin America, but what's wrong with Fokker jets and turboprops?? I mean, as far as noise and pollution goes, I'm sure European countries are at least as stringent as we are. icon_question.gif
