I am 16 years old and I was looking for a summer job that could involve aviation at either a small recrational airport or possibly a bigger named airport like Cleveland-Hopkins or Akron-Canton that are near me. When I traveled through Hamilton Airport, in Cinnci, I saw a teenager working there as a refueler and taxier and thought I might be able to get a job at an airport also. The job could include washing, fueling planes, etc. Thanks to everyone for answering back!

I think it might get difficult finding such a job at the bigger airports, unless you don't bother working inside the terminals. I'd simply give the airport of your choice a call and ask them for a list of companies stationed there. They might also have a website with enough information. If its a smaller airfield just stop by and ask for help, they might even show you around a bit if there is time.

Check out any of the smaller airports FBO's. They might need some help. A buddy of mine washed planes at your age and also fueled them, and said the work was much more challenging then he thought. Go ahead and give it a shot, don't be shy- ask everyone if they may need some work.

My son started out taking care of my 2 plane flight school (at 14) and met the fuel guys and found out they were leaving for college.(at 16) He went right up to the airport manager and asked for the job and got it. He pumped gas for 2 years for good county money. He graduates Embry Riddle next month and has his commercial multi and instrument ratings CFI next month. (At 22) He's now looking at the Air Guard

Yeah don't give up, the jobs are there. Show up, be seen, meet people.

Hey wanabe1, thanks for sharing your story and welcome to the forums!
Looks like your son has planned out his aviation career perfectly. Guess he got infected by his father...

@usaskiracer1210: Whats the news? Already working at your local airfield?

Cheers, Chill

Kewel story. If I may add my two penneth.

Hey listen - there is also making coffee (and Tea ) and answering the phone, cutting their grass - going down to pick up the sarnies, meeting folks, clearing out the rubbish, cleaning the aircraft - inside and sometimes out (but usually thats left for when you return home in a heavy shower = clean aeroplane, natural pressure washer)

Also, someone has got to make food and sell it, and sweep up. You also get to ask questions and invarably get them answered and hang around so much that you get airbourne going up with a PPLer and you will quickly get into flying.

Try also, to get a chick who like flying also - as if you keep dragging her up to the flying club/school every other minute and she is only into the Miami Dolphins then well, -, , , , hope everyone is enjoying the lovely holiday atmosphere of joy, investment and growth and progress. Seriously though (we have many months of food, don`t worry - at least it is global so there is no shame!). The sun shines and tea and cakes still continue to be manufactured, God is in his Heaven and all is right with the world.

The markets are well bottomed out and bouyant now and starting to groan back upwards, things are unpredictably picking up - there are loads of flying jobs and some seriously juicy deals on type ratings etc .

Now is the time to invest in flight training, prices are cheap at top quality training providors. From 15k for a type rating to
9, kinda cool. `dun`t do much for the industry but at least it is a good time for those who wan to get up on the ladder.

Hello. At 16 it may be hard to find something. However, like others have said try to get on with the FBOs first. I have been trying lots of FBOs and applying for a couple airline ramp agent jobs for a few years now. Well, I had an interview with an FBO last year and they hired someone else. Even after that I kept checking with them and sending an email every once in awhile. Well, on Monday they offered me a job. This isn't an easy industry to get your foot in the door. However, the sooner you apply and the more persistant you are, the better chance you have. If they say no the first time follow up with them.

It's just like trying for any other job. You might try and even put together a resume--try searching it online, there's lots of little forms you can just fill in and it'll generate one for you. The key to getting a job is to just be persistent, call them back..ask questions, be interested! They want to see that you're eager to get it. Just keep trying wherever you apply, you're bound to find something eventually...even if it is a low-key job to start out with. icon_biggrin.gif
