Full Version: Why Do People See Us As Nerds?
Flightlevel350.com Forums > FL350 Forum > Off Topic
Emirates-Guy
Hi guys,

Most people think that airline fraeks are all nerds. I don't view myself as a nerd though. Actualy, I'm pretty kinda....well.....ehhhm....cooooooool B)

But how do you you view your self?

Don't be ashamed, we're all friends here.
flight boffin
Yeah i get some stick off some 'friends' about it. Well my name is Flight boffin which means flight geek in a way. I think im pretty cool haha. Well thats what i think but what others think doesn't bother me. icon_smile.gif
aircadet
Y the heck would they think that? Do we not all have a life?
Hawker
If anyone is a geek, Its all of us who fly for a liveing, and then on out time off we frequent an aviation website! Most people like my wife, think I am crazy!
A340-600
hey,

well i'm crazy about planes, and nobody think that i'm a nerd, actually i'm kinda popular around here, so if any1 makes fun of u, they're just a bunch of lowlives who don't have any hobies or a plan for a future, so they're jelous enough to make fun of others which do, i thnk thats what most ppl call "cool". where i am, cool is a nice guy who has a lot of friends and is happy..
flyhigh-747
In my opinion people see us as nerds because they feel been a pilot is to big of a dream to go after, I'll have the last laugh. Another thing that bothers me is that people think your cool if you know alot about cars and anything got to do with them. Come on which is better, Cars or planes ( I have a feeling this is going to start another debate) Us geeks are the one's that will be flying them around the world and at least we have a dream, If they don't discover one and go after it they'll regret it and they'll be cleaning my mansion and swiming pool on saturdays! (just meesing)
Human Freight
I am not a pilot.

I went to school to be a nerd. I am a fat guy with a pocket protecter and thick glasses. I get paid well for my nerdness!!!!!!!!!!!

I am with you, Im an av 'geek' too! :D Not like that's anything to be ashamed of...
However, some are much more extreme geeks than others.

Actually, my friends think what I'm doing is really neat, and I'm in the "cool" group of the school, so I guess it just depends on people B) B)
flight boffin
So what if we have an interest. One of many interests, why they pick on that one is just stupid in my opinion. I could go round saying that other peoples hobbys are crap but i don't because i respect what their interests are.

Superb quote young man!

At the end of the day, any interest or hobby that requires brainwork, and that is not something physical, is probably perceived as geeky by the great unwashed.

Do their opinions matter? When you're a teenager, probably! At that age you're concerned with fitting in but later in life you'll be more concerned with being different!

Sounds cheesy but be yourself, enjoy what you do and you'll reap the benefits in the future. One day you'll be on that flightdeck!

Yea what i hate is when i am at school looking stuff up on the computer and the ugliest kid in the school who will probably never have a girlfriend comes up to me and says "thats all you do? look at planes all day?" <_<

Yes and be making more than the person who was making fun of you could dream.

THEY (the general public - who know J--k) think we are Nerds/Geeks because...

we are happy - and, unfortunately, they are not. So they seek alternatives like - talking about football. The ball is kicked - into - the - net. Duty carried out.

So they get ex-footballers to come on telly (T.V., for all you colonial Dudes and Dudessesses) and talk about the-(soccer ball) going - into - the - net.

Then the views (general public) go to a Pub, and drink lots of beer - because they cannot think of anything to do, and it bonds society together talking about the - ball - going = into - the - net.

So while they are talking about this major operation - they are not roaming the streets beating each other up.

When the Geek/Nerd, lands a 747 in a Typhoon, their (the publics) viewpoint is that Geeky is some great hero.

The other day, an F100 had a microswitch failure on the gear, so they did not get three greens etc., etc...yawn.

So, they did the fly by the tower. Yup, gear down chaps. Then all the pilot has to do is land it. If there is a bump followed by a grinding scraping sound then the gear folded back up again - tough titty. If, the gear stays down then its prob a micro-switch or something or something engineering. ok? So this jet lands, all ok. Fantastic. The next day I am on the net drinking hot Chocolate because its snowing like a ----- outside and there is this chick going on about how great the (nerd/geek) pilot was in landing the jet!!! and she went on and on and on and on....

So, take no notice of the maddening crowd who follow each other around like ants.
Be a Nerd and a Geek - for the world needs Nerds and Geeks - thats why we get the flying jobs or other related aviation jobs which are generally total, for us and they spend their time watching soccer and drinking beer - all -the - time. Duh.
roamingrichy
Because we are!! icon_smile.gif

All I say is - who cares what other people think. do what makes you happy, and if thats beer for some, and planes for others - so be it!!

Fastjet: I love football and beer! Don't knock it till you try it!!
Tim
Football and beer is great - or even the beer without the football lol... actually parties and alcohol beets aviation any day :D ...well at my age anyway (18)

I'm one of those popular kids at my school due to the fact I play hockey, im nice and funny (and super hot icon_razz.gif ) etc.. but my friends look at me funny when they come over and I'm playing fs2004. I have a friend who couldn't be less interested in airplanes but is going to the same college as me for ATC. Anytime I'm playing FS he asks me to blow something up.
LEVT
Well, my friends laugh at me when we see a plane flying over my town, but in a friendly way. I mean, they don't mean to hurt me. I think they'll like planes in the end... But to me, I don't bother if anyone tells me that I'm a nerd...
Rv-4pilot
ive got friends that took seperate paths and some that didnt and i dont look at them any different because i know we're all still friends and one in the same

YES!!! THANK YOU! WE are shunned from society for NO reason. We have a passion. It's like people who like fashion or videogames dis us...........but it's the exact same thing. But W/E.
kobester
I have a friend, who calls me airplane freak! I tell him that "Yes I am an Airplane Freak!" Then he shuts up.
Jorge
If you're into anything you're a nerd to someone. To people who like computers, they might call people who play football "jocks." Everybody calls eachother something.
RubyJoolz
:D :D :D
I think planes are absolutely amazing, I am always totally in awe of them when I watch them take off and land!! All that weight, all that power......................

AWESOME!!!

Just stay focused. These guys picking on you are nothing but ambient chatter as you march on toward your goal of flying. First take care of the business at hand. School.

Yea be proud of what you are

well there tend to be a lot of people that likes planes in my school

so no worries

but i don't care what ppl say about me
Jumpshot724
Back in HS....a joke here or there, nothing harmful. Actually, during our senior trip my shop teacher and assistant principal/ex Amer. Hist. teach/dean of students/class advisor were asking me to identify all the aircraft

Then one of them asked me what year our aircraft was....I couldnt answer that one

Here in college, I am an aerospace engineer in training....so everyone in my classes either loves planes, or spacecraft. Actually, I am one of 4 that I know that plan on trying to get into the airline industry. I know 3 kids who actually have their ppl too. That plus the fact that 95% of the people I know/talk to are engineers in training anyway, and nerds dont make fun of nerds
futurepilot
I am the only airplane buff in 5 secondary grades at my school.People dont think that i am a ''nerd'' actually they think its cool to know about airplanes.
bernoulli
I have read every post in this topic and have complete understanding with you guys and can even relate a little. But if we are to even accept the premise that "plane lovers are nerds", then I guess that Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, Burt Rutan, Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, Bob Hoover, Santos Dumont, Orville and Wilbur Wright, Sally Ride, etc. etc. etc. etc..... were nerds. The list is too long!

Time to put to bed this whole nerd/aviation association idea. It exists only in your mind. The painful truth is, if you are perceived as a nerd by your peers, then maybe you are. And it has nothing to do with aviation.

Here's the good news. If you ARE a nerd (and you know who you are), your chances of success are exponentially better than those who "pick on you". Nerdship simply means that you don't necessarily "fit in" with average people. Bill Gates didn't either. It usually means that you actually have focus on something at an age younger than most. For that you should be proud. And yes, time to forgo any illusion of winning a popularity contest. Won't happen. Forget it now.

Nerds seem less distracted by the "fluff", and more intuned to the "meat". You guys go for the "jugular", so to speak, and find your place in the grand scheme of things much earlier, giving you a huge advantage.

Press on nerds!! B)
flight boffin
Wow great speach! :D

Personally i think its because we are the ones that have a life and a interesting hobby and the people who think we are nerds are the opposite. :D

I used to get alot of crap from people as well. I tried a tatic of ignoring them but that did'nt work so I went around school purposley talking about planes infront of them till they realised I did'nt give a ---- about what they think of me and what I like. The funny thing is some of the people who used to annoy ended up liking planes and one of them even has a discovery flight next week. There is still one or two who still annoy by saying military pilots are the coolest. Yeah, flying over to Iraq in a f-16 with a rocket up your **I have a dirty mouth**, how cool.....NOT!!!
B22EL
I dont think they realize that us "airlines freaks" are what get them to their resorts, beachs, and spring break parties....
ACA345
Yeah, me too...

I don't wanna brag or anything, but girls like me, and I've got lots of friends. I am a good athlete, and a nice person icon_razz.gif lol. B

But if you like airplanes, its not being a nerd. Like some people like cars, or drawing, you enjoy airplanes which in my mind and other people's minds (that I know) is not a problem.

BTW, my friends don't act that way because they are fanatics... They are just like anyone else you could say.

Same with me, I've actually gotten some people interested in flying, although they don't take it as seriously as me. I think some people see flying as geeky because they know it takes knowledge to succesfully operate an airplane and read instrument's, and it doesn't take much physical ability. But that's my 2 Cents!
roamingrichy
I'm a lawyer who wishes he was a pilot!

Still, at least I'm in the transport division of my firm - which means I get to work with many aircraft related cases (and of course FS2004 which provides non-stop entertainment!! icon_smile.gif )

Right, more work to do, can't be a nerd all day, lol!!
bluebird121
;) As i live near a small private airport i feel i am very lucky to be able to watch small planes and helicopters as well as microlights take off and land..In fact my head is more up in the sky than down on the ground..One of these days i will cycle straight into the canal..I have come close to it a few times...
