Are you nervous about turbulence? Remeber that the air is much like the ocean, there are currents and waves and bumps are to be expected. It's a mass in motion. Just like going in a boat on the water or driving along a pot holed road, expect there will be some bumps along the way. The a/c are made to handle the stress of these ups & downs so you don't have to worry.

Turbulence is the norm, not the exception. There are very few turbulence free flights. Aircraft have a huge structural margin built in to accomodate turbulence far more than you will ever experience. Doesn't mean that you should penetrate a level 4 cell, which can easily be avoided, but getting bumped, even thrown about the cockpit or cabin is more of a discomfort and annoyance than a safety issue. As long as you are well strapped in, that is.
Next time you and your dad hit a rough spot, just remember that it's not a big deal. It's completely normal.

Ok, I see that SF3aviatrix's answer is probably much more comforting. Not that mine is necessarily wrong, but I tend to use more of a sledge hammer approach. Sorry for that...

I'd say go up and have fun. I bet theres plenty of people in the world who would love to sitting where you are. So think about how lucky you actually are!

;) i do so envy people who can sleep on a plane..i just can't even close my eyes for two minutes...that is why i cannot ever see me flying to a far off place as i would be absolutely shattered by the time i got there...(unless someone knocked me over the head that is)

I never sleep on flights, no matter how long it is. I just watch movies all the way through. Krisworld is great!

I never sleep either.. I'm too excited to sleep so its hard for me.
I love turbulence.. I remember one flight we were landing at Amsterdam and we fell about 100 feet or so and I was like "yes!!!" and then I got people around me staring at me like I was crazy...

Turbulence has in some cases caused injuries....but keep in mind ,the injuries are mostly caused by loose items flying around or you yourself flying around .So it's actually not the shaking that hurts, but those loose items that hit you .It's like in an earthquake. It's not the earth shaking, that kills you, it's the house falling on you.
While a little turbulence is probably unavoidable on all flights, all you need to do is to secure loose items and stay comfortably buckled up. That's all you really need to do! The plane and the pilots will do their rest...........
