To act as PIC while carrying passengers (talking FAA here), you need to have made three takeoffs and landings within the preceding 90 days in the category and class, and type if required, of aircraft. They must be to a full stop if you're flying a plane with conventional gear. So I've been a little confused on this.

Does this mean for currency in a taildragger, you can make the three full stop landing in a tricycle gear plane (assuming both are SEL)? If so, would that also mean you could do thee touch and goes in a taildragger, making you current for a tricycle gear plane, but not for the same plane you were just flying?

Also, if you make three landings in a plane requiring a type rating (say a B707), will that make you current in any MEL plane that doesn't require a type rating, like a Seminole?

For the most part you are on the right track. Lets dive into this though.

For currency in a tricycle gear airplane, lets say a C-172, all you need for daytime currency is 3 take-offs and landings. They do not have to be full stop in a tricycle gear airplane unless you are going for nightime currency.

All landings made for currecy to carry pax at night have to be to a full-stop, no touch and goes. And you need 3 of them as well. Now, your nightime currency can also count for your daytime currency, but not the other way around. Daytime is only good for daytime, nightitme is good for both.

For taildragger airplanes, all 3 landings for currency, no matter whether or not they are done for day or night currency, have to be to a full stop. You never do touch and goes in a tail dragger for currency. Also, currency in a tail dragger will also count as currency in a tricycle gear airplane as appropriate for day and night operations.

On to the type rating question. Let say you get your 3 landings in a EMB-145 (since that is what I fly). You are now current in that and any ME airplane that DOES NOT require a type rating. So yes you can go fly a Seminole as PIC, but not a B-747.

I hope that this has helped. If you have any more questions. PM me and I will be happy to help.

Thanks for the reply.

Is that any ME or any MEL?

How does currency in a seaplane work anyways? They techincally don't have a tailwheel, so can you just do touch and goes for day currency in SES or MES?

One more. If you make three touch and goes in a tail dragger at night (for whatever reason), would that make you current for day tricycle gear pax carrying?

Just remember these 3 things for easy reference.

Category: Airplane, Rotocraft, Lighter than Air and Glider
Class: Single Engine, Multi Engine, Land, Sea, Gyroplane, Helicopter, Airship, Free Balloon
Type: Turbojet (or Turbofan), 12,500 lbs. or greater, as determined by the administrator

So, if I were to do my landings in an EMB-145, I have covered;
Airplane (Category)
Multi Engine, Land (Class)
EMB-145 (type)

As long as the next airplane that I fly fits into these areas, then I am good to go. So, if I do 3 landings in an EMB-145 during the day, than I can go fly my Beech Baron as well because the EMB is in the same category and class as the Baron.

Like I said, just remember that the landings have to be in category, class and type (if required). The only real oddball is the tailwheel landings all have to be made to a full stop.

Hope that helps.

And to answer your last question, yes, that would work. Just not Tricycle to tailwheel.
