Full Version: Is The Raf Going Out Of Date?

F14 Tomcat
This may seem like a stupid question as we have the Eurofighter Typhoon in service (and many more to come). But i think that the E3 sentry (although a brilliant aircraft) is getting past it. To replace it I would suggest the 737-800 Wedgetail that is inservice with the RAAF. This 737 is at top for AWACS.

Also i think our VC-10 (again a brilliant aircraft) is getting out of date as it has been in service for 40years. We also have the tristar which is also not bran new. To replace these i think we should use the KC 767. This is currently in flight testing stage for the Italian Airforce.

Furthermore against this arguement the Americans ( I know not the best example) have kept there B52's in service for well over 50 years and the Americans are saying that they will be in service for many years to come as upgrades are being made all the time. Is this the way forward for our Airforce, keep upgrading our aircraft?

Like mentioned in another topic by a forum administrator, Why spend more money and _____(time, service... something) when you have an aircraft that can do the job already, just fine.

Those 707s that have been re-engined with the CFM F108s are probably going to be used well way into the future.

The VC-10... I haven't heard that aircraft mentioned in ages, why not use the KC330, personally I'd think the -330 would be an excellent choice for a new tanker for the RAF, because of its large wingspan, and the external tanks it can support with the drouges that the RAF uses... I could see the -330 fitting better than the KC-767;(not saying that the 767 doesn't have the drouges).

As for Attack, and Fighters... that area isn't of my most interest.
