hello,
I've noticed that Finnairs Md-11 engine vary slightly from the shorter stubby cones : http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1113223/L/

to the long cones:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1119751/L/

to some that even have both :
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1102812/L/
this one is esp wierd as it has engine no1 and 2 the same but 3 is different

they are both the same manufacturer but why the difference in size of the exhaust cone?

There was a similar topic on the Tri-Star, whether it's the same kinda thing or not I'am not sure, but take a look.

QUOTE
The engines on the very early model Tristars had an even longer "hot section" fitted. It was shown through tests though, that they offered no performance gains, so a redesigned shorter "hot section" covering was installed, and early models were retrofitted with the samller and lighter units.

There is a GE (Finnair's MD-11s use GE CF6-80C2 engines) modification that replaces the standard short cone with a longer cone. The engines themselves are otherwise identical. I'm not sure of the purpose of the modification but I guess it probably reduces fuel consumption. Apparently the airplane in the last photo has a mix of modded and non-modded enignes.

Fluff beat me to it. To my knowledge, the MD-11 came equipped with two engine options. The General Electric CF6-80C2D1F producing 61,500 lbs. of thrust and the Pratt&Whitney PW4462 producing up to 62,000 lbs. of thrust. FinnAir uses the GE's so as Fluff said, it must a mod.

By the way, either engine is wonderful. My company has MD-11's with both. They are easy to operate, have lots of power and are reliable.

From a spotters point of view: a streteched fuselage, longer wingspan, modified tail and the most obvious clue- the winglets.

Funny...my last non-pilot b/f tried to break me of 'pilot-speak'. Didn't work.

Checked out both the videos.Nice job Ranger!I did see the videos earlier but never made the connection.Very informative.I used to live in Dubai and Sharjah earlier. These MD-11's were frequent visitors.I'm sure he must have been in one of them.I do hope he finds the time to shoot more videos for enthus like me,although I do hope the language is not pilot type but more elementary for starters to understand.
Cheers!
