hello,
I've noticed that Finnairs Md-11 engine vary slightly from the shorter stubby cones : http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1113223/L/

to the long cones:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1119751/L/

to some that even have both :
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1102812/L/
this one is esp wierd as it has engine no1 and 2 the same but 3 is different

they are both the same manufacturer but why the difference in size of the exhaust cone?

Fluff beat me to it. To my knowledge, the MD-11 came equipped with two engine options. The General Electric CF6-80C2D1F producing 61,500 lbs. of thrust and the Pratt&Whitney PW4462 producing up to 62,000 lbs. of thrust. FinnAir uses the GE's so as Fluff said, it must a mod.

By the way, either engine is wonderful. My company has MD-11's with both. They are easy to operate, have lots of power and are reliable.
