A huge fire has engulfed the cargo section of Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport, disrupting flights
The authorities said three people suffered smoke inhalation but there were no other casualties.
The do not yet know the cause, but suspect a short circuit in the cargo section..So far they have ruled out any terrorist act but are continuing their investigations.
This is the link to the story.

As smoke covers entire airport:

"United 342, report runway in sight"

"Approach, Ummm..."

Sounds like lots of damage has been done but everything is under control.

"Amazingly, the airport director claimed the blaze had little effect on flights."

Thats quite scary! iam glad no one got seriously injured and hope they find the cause of this fire. Closing the airport and diverting flights is the safe option in these circumstances, i hope it dosent happen again.

Yeah, I just watched this on the news - seemed pretty bad, but they've got it under control now and they showed the water bomber flying up and down, and collecting water from the sea. It seems that it didn't affect airport ops at all, because they showed aircraft landing and departing whilst the fire raged! Oh well, I'm glad it's under control now.

By the way that link needs to be changed, or you need to press next story at the bottom of the article, because the article is now something about schools icon_biggrin.gif

I see that they're using water bombers to control the flames.Hats off to the pilots and I hope and pray for all those involved

Let's also hope that it has nothing to do with the collision between the Greek/Turkish fighters recently.

I loved how CNN covered this "thousands flee as airport terminal explodes in istambul...possible terrorist attack due to recent osama bin laden video release..." Talk about scaring the $hit out of people without proof...

They are overdoing it when they say Thousands. It was in the cargo area of the airport, where there are NO passengers at. I know the main airport got evacuated but still, it most definently was not a "flee." Don't take anything seriously from the press, they always overdo it.

I do not know what to make of it now as according to the BBC World on television a Kurdish separatist group claimed it had started it to protest against the Turkish "massacres" against the Kurds..who knows what to think.. icon_question.gif
