I am wondering if a student pilot needs a student pilot "license" or permit (like a driving permit) in order to fly and if they need a Class 3 Medical before they start taking flying lessons.

In order to solo in the US, you will need an FCC radio license and a Third-Class medical.

No, you don't need your medical before beginning flight training, but you do need it before you can solo. Your student pilot certificate is required to solo as well. And, actually, your 3rd-class medical and student pilot certificate are the same piece of paper. You obtain the medical and, when you are ready to solo, your flight instructor endorses it.

FCC radio license? I didn't get that until I applied at the airline because they required it. Otherwise I still wouldn't have one.

You are no longer required to have an FCC license in the States. It IS required in other countries.

Yes, you'll get your student pilot certificate and your medical certificate at the same time when you go to the AME. Student pilot is good for 24 calender months, and 3rd class is good 36 calender months, depending on your age.

as for the FCC Radio License... that's only if you're flying international, for instnace into Canada.
