i didnt realise quite how loud these booms are! even though i was under the flight path of concorde out of heathrow! (i live over a hundred miles away though from the airport)

Now i understand why concords were prohbited from supersonic flight over cities.... does a sonic boom ocur again when slowing down?

Hey Eric,

This is a complex subject, but in simple terms for people like me to understand, the "boom" is not an "event" that takes place once an aircraft accelerates beyond the speed of sound, or, in the case of your question, decelerates below it. But once that aircraft does exceed the speed of sound, a shockwave is formed, due to various factors, from the aircraft. The key thing to note here is that the shockwave (during steady supersonic flight) is constantly occurring and moving with the aircraft.

So the "boom" you hear on the ground is just the shockwave passing over you as it follows the aircraft.

There was a complaint in another post that America "banned" Concorde. In fact, Concorde was NEVER banned; it was simply prohibited from flying at supersonic speeds over populated areas. That video demonstrates precisely WHY they were prohibited. They were perfectly free and welcome to fly anywhere over land at SUBsonic speeds, but BA and Air France decided it wouldn't be economical to operate at subsonic speeds. Thus, the Concorde served only New York and Washington, with an occasional subsonic courtesy flight to other cities to show off the plane. As mentioned, this video demonstrates the reasons. Interestingly, while the French were griping about America "banning" Concorde, the French banned ALL aircraft from flying over Paris for whatever reason, noise abatement, etc. I could never understand why the French could accept such bans over their own territory, but then wanted to operate as supersonic speeds over American soil. At any rate, now you know what the problem was. BIG bangs!! BIG!!

ahh i see now, cheers- so a soinic boom is a constant event however only heard breifly because it moves on....

I life in a quiet village in Belgium,not far off Antwerp.I was at home today when suddenly I heard "BOOM-BOOM",and felt vibration at the same time.
My dog was sleeping(with open eyes)and in a second she try to do the same by barking "WAF-WAF". In the past,in the year 1960-1970,I heard that sound many times and therefore I know it was a military plane,maybe F-16,passing the sound-barrier,accidently I suppose.
Today the sky was blue;my dog and I were running in the garden and I saw one contrail turning around just above my head.
Because in the most countries it is not tolerated to fly above the sound barrier over land,I wonder if people know the sound of "BOOM-BOOM" and also if people know how this shock is feeling,because there is a vibration too.

This reminds me of an airshow experience I had a long time ago, this was before the Ramstein disaster when flying over the crowd was still allowed.

A Panavia Tornado was taxiing onto the runway while the announcer explains that the pilot will make a simulated attack run on the airfield. The Tornado takes off and disappears into the distance to the left. Everyone is staring to the left, waiting for the plane to return - and then it screams by from behind. It was not a sonic boom, but lemme tell ya: Mach 0.85+ at 300ft makes a LOT of noise! Some people were so startled that they dove onto the ground to find cover! If I had been the pilot I would have been laughing so hard that I'd have to put the plane on autopilot... There are probably some people that are still looking for their eardrums.
