QUOTE
Alan McCabe, pub manager in Croydon: "Area is an absolute war zone"
Violence has broken out for a third consecutive day in London, with riot police deployed and firefighters tackling blazes across the capital.

Shops were looted and buildings, among them a furniture store in Croydon, set alight as police clashed with youths.

Trouble first flared on Saturday after a peaceful protest in Tottenham over the fatal shooting of a man by police.

The prime minister is returning early from holiday to chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee Cobra.

David Cameron, who is on holiday in Italy, was due to board a flight on Monday night ahead of a meeting with Home Secretary Theresa May and Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner Tim Godwin on Tuesday.

A government spokesman said the prime minister has been monitoring the situation on "an hourly basis".

Mounted police

At least 225 people have been arrested and 36 charged following the riots across London over the past three days, Scotland Yard said.

Monday's violence started in Hackney after a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found.
There were also fears trouble may spread further afield as police in riot gear were deployed in Birmingham city centre after scores of youths rampaged through the shopping area, smashing windows and looting from shops.

Meanwhile:

Cars were set on fire in Lewisham
A bus and shop were set alight in Peckham
Several fires broke out in Croydon, including one at a large furniture shop which spread to neighbouring buildings and tram lines
In Hackney 200 riot officers with dogs and mounted police were located around Mare Street where police cars were damaged
Looters raided a Debenhams store and a row of shops in Lavender Hill in Clapham
In Birmingham, police said officers had made 35 arrests, including six juveniles, on Monday evening
Buses were diverted as the violence spread to Bromley High Street
There were reports of looting of phone shops in Woolwich High Street, in south London, and a torched police car
Shops and restaurants were damaged in Ealing, west London, and there was a fire in Haven Green park opposite Ealing Broadway Tube
Football matches at Charlton and West Ham which were due to be played on Tuesday have been postponed at the request of the police
At Clapham Junction looters stole masks from a fancy dress store to hide their identity
The fresh violence prompted Mr Godwin to call on parents to contact their children and urge the public to clear London's streets.

In the first outbreak of violence on Monday, groups of people began attacking the police in Hackney at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

Police cars were also smashed by youths armed with wooden poles and metal bars.

Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD Sports store, before being dispersed by police.

Planks of wood taken from a lorry were then hurled towards lines of riot office.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a lane off Mare Street the wreckage of a burnt-out car still smoulders, surrounded by riot police.

At least for now, the violence in this half of London seems to have abated. I was talking to one young man who had received on his BlackBerry a list of places where he said there will be further trouble tonight.

He didn't tell me which places and stressed it is speculation. But he and a friend told me frustration with poverty in the area was boiling over.

On Mare Street there is the sound of crunching as police vans run over broken glass. Much of it from a bottle bank which was overturned providing makeshift missiles for rioters who lobbed the bottles at police.

Trouble in the heart of Hackney
In nearby Lewisham, a number of vehicles and a trail of bins were set on fire.

One resident in Croydon, who gave his name as Adam said he saw two cars which had been set on fire.

He said: "One older woman was dragged out and they set the car on fire. Then another car around the corner was on fire, then we counted about 12 to 15 shops that had been looted.

"The looting started about three hours ago. I just came back into my apartment and the looting was still going on - not a single policeman."

Ealing resident Christian Potts, 29, was driving through the area when he witnessed the disturbances.

"It looks like a war zone - I have never seen anything like it in all my life," he said.

"There were about 25 to 30 masked youths on Haven Green and they just started tearing into a florist with bricks.

"It's a local family-run business so I can't see why they are doing this."

In Birmingham City Centre looters attacked shops, smashing windows and stealing items.

An eyewitness said windows have been smashed in McDonalds and Jessops near Birmingham Cathedral and a sign has been thrown through a gym window.

'Sheer criminality'

London's mayor Boris Johnson is cutting short his holiday to return to the city.

Home Secretary Theresa May also returned early from holiday, to meet Metropolitan Police (Met) chiefs to discuss their response to the violence.

Mrs May condemned the riots as "sheer criminality" and said those responsible would "face the consequences of their actions".

The trouble follows two nights of violence over the weekend which started after police shot a man dead in Tottenham.

Mrs May said: "The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally unacceptable."

A peaceful protest in Tottenham on Saturday over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan, 29, was followed by violence which spread into Sunday.

Theresa May: London rioters 'will be brought to justice'
A candlelit vigil was due to be held at The High Cross in Tottenham on Monday evening.

Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said there were "significant resources" on the streets, with a third more officers on duty than on Sunday.

He said: "What we can see is that the Metropolitan Police are getting police officers there in numbers.

"When we have large numbers of criminals intent on that type of violence, we can only do that, get lots of officers there quickly and try to protect local businesses and local people."

But eyewitnesses reported as trouble spread across the city there were often few police officers around when violence flared.

Mr Kavanagh also admitted relations with the family of the man shot dead by police could have been handled better.

Mr Kavanagh said: "I want to apologise to the Duggan family because I think both the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) and the Metropolitan Police could have managed that family's needs more effectively."

John Adderley in Peckham: "I could see a bus on fire"

How sad I was to see this on the news over here in Australia. lt looks as if war had broken out and in a way it has. These people seem out of control and enjoying looting and burning buildings and cars. The Government now has to take urgent action and bring out new laws.. forget about the Human rights lot ..The folk arrested must be made to pay and not by the soft jail sentences with all the comforts of home. maybe a wee spell in the desert with the Foreign Legion would give them something to think about. There just is no deterrent!!

What you are asking for would lead GB to fascism.
I don't think people would like that, especially those who fought against that during WWII, those who survived the war I mean.
No, I think what we need right here right now, and not only in the UK, is justice. This would make people relax a little bit and reduce their anger. That's all.

Fascism? How about law enforcement? What are these "protesters" actually protesting? I realize the killing of a young man by police started this whole nightmare, but it seems this tragic event was just the spark to light the real fire.

Here's a direct quote from a rioter:

QUOTE
It's the rich people, the people that got businesses, and that's why all of this is happening, because of rich people. So we're just showing the rich people we can do what we want.

Anyone else find this mentality a tad disturbing? Would any of these hooligans prefer employment from a poor person? By this NITWIT's own definition, ANY business owner is rich. LOL

Just goes to show there are no limits to ignorance.

Actually both my mum and my late dad fought in in war.. and she was in the ACK ACK in London during the Blitz. whilst that is now history, it breaks her heart to see hooligans burning and looting in and around London. Just like another war she says.
This has not just happened in London though. It has spread to Birmingham and Manchester. So what axe do they have to grind?
What is justice?? You tell me what they will do with the 1000+ folk who have been arrested and not yet brought to trial.?
I will tell you what will happen. They will be fined or maybe a wee spell in a cosy jail and that is that. No comfort to all the folk from all corners of the world who have lost everything they have worked for is it?
It is not anger they feel. They want to have what the 'wealthy have' , but for free. Just loot shops cause as much damage as possible for 'fun'. You won't get caught and just help yourself to the contents. it does not matter that is someone's liveliehood. The smug looks on their faces said it all.
The rather worrying scenario in all this are the ages of the perpatrators. Some as young as 10. Where are the parents in all this? What would happen if these people were convicted and told they have to pay back all the damage? That won't happen alas.! The sad thing is that in the end they will all have to pay one way or another through even higher taxes or some other method.

Absolutley, the rich provide the poor(er) with jobs/work. these guys aint worked in their lives, they don`t know what work is - this is the price of freedom, some shmuck just want to gorge it and get sick on it. And, they breed, they breed, the rioting lil murr fuggers. so, any passing fascistic leader can just jump on board and make it all better and here we go again . . .

Dave Cameron, has the right idea - put the lil murr fuggers in jail, which is precisely what he did.

also, there are intelligent ( I choke on my words) a-ss-oles who rile all these mindless morons up and get them to riot on the internet., blaming, always blaming. Blaming the Government, blaming the rich, blaming this blaming that, blaming everything and anything but oneself. Their opinion is thast some people come into life with it all on a plate and others have to work for it. well, I1ve got news for them - it aint the case - rich or poor you still gotta work hard to call something your own. Take me for example. am a poor murr but a small amount would type me - why aint I got it, coz of a defect in me I guess, not society not the Govt, not God, not the Prime minister, not the system (which does not actually exist - bit like time) but me, fantastic lil ol me, an when I`ve cracked the code like work hard and save your dosh then I might,. might, make it.

Bring back National Service (conscription/ the draft), that`ll shut the murr fuggers up!

People are dying in Afghanistan to protect these u8ngrateful sorry a-sed ba-tards

This is/was not political this is a lame, but lame excuse for jam butty gangsters or in American lingo; Tootsy Roll gangsters! to come out and cause mayhem just to thieve from a few shops and cause untold damage the out of control uneducated, uncaring, unthinking puff heads. "innit?"

Thats what you get for letting be available Marijuana which has such an untold pharma strength that only gangsters grow it coupled with chemicals which help to drive people crazy. They have no fixed values and beliefs, no brains and no minds. F---g scum. the have no objective, no dreams and only instant gratification senses are operational. do what they used to do in my grandfather`s day (God rest his soul) and that is: give the `lil fugger the birch and then rub salt into it - that`d make `em think.

Happily, we have a Government who is far more balanced than I am and they are addressing the situation by trying to connect and access the poor downtrodden lil thugs and are building outward bound courses which the kids are finding rewarding and exciting and it helps them to get to grips with real challenges of leadership skills and outdoor courses like they do in Army Cadet training etc.

This might help !

Also, they should use the exa,ple of some of our schools and go in co-operation with the parents at home: basically, if you mess up at home then you get detention in class - like a nice saturday. The have tried this and it works. The resultant factor was that the kids scored highly pulling in grades like triple A* and a few A`s and maybe a B or C or two, that is really good going! This all due to school / parent co-operation - it works. The kids have now a basis a structure on which to start their lives - nothing short of excellent. The repeated detentions gave them extra study time so their grades were up instead of puffing their `lil heads off and talking undiluted sewage, they were tackling real academic problems get getting real solutions and real results and at the end of the nday they realised their successes were down to them, themselves and that they themselves can make a difference instead of waiting for the world to hand it to them on a plate which simply does not happen. It takes work and sustained time and commitment and these kids have found that because they grafted hard and put in the time instead of listening to silly gangsters who care about nothing and no-one and blame everyone for nothing.

Whoever get good grades from rich or poor backgrounds - it is due to their own sweat, tears and efforts or moreover - due to their putting their hours in, studying in and working with the study schedule. Admittedly an abjectly poor environment of disaffected families/groups does provide a harder time for those young people who want to get on and get good grades, but they did it and they must not only thank the schools, system and parents but also thank themselves for the effort they have put in - and thank themselves for GIVING THEMSELVES A CHANCE TO STUDY AND GET GOOD GRADES instead of listening to mad puff dealers driving around in BMWs who achieve nothing which is good or lasting, except of course, a prison term.

icon_wink.gif Congratulations on your selective spelling with some words. I think we all got that point Fast Jet.. You are spot on with everything you say.Maybe the UK Government will try something like a Boot camp. No soft options anymore and no soft jail terms or would it be probation??
