Internet On Planes? Options

I was thinking Will on the web if planes have Internet access or Maybe will one day!
I dont no about you but wouldnt it be great!

Some already offer the service. Don't ask who, or on what aircraft though, because I don't know. Biz class I'd expect....

Internet is slowly making it's way on aircraft. I believe Virgin America (if it 'takes off', no pun intended) would be the first airline to feature internet throughout the cabin. Each seat would contain an RJ-45 connection, where you could simply plug in. I am sure there would be some sort of pricing accompanying it however.

I know that internet access is on all long-haul flights. Emirates, I know, has wireless internet for a fee.

Boeing offers it as an option in their newer planes. It's called Boeing Connexion.

I've had a chat with trijet on here while he was crossing the atlantic once, pretty funny when you think you're talking to someone who's in the middle of nowhere moving very fast at FL380 or so...

Inflight internet has been on the market for about 2 years. The launching customer was Lufthansa German Airlines.
Soon thereafter airlines like SAS and ANA joined in to offer their customers in all classes of service internet access via WLAN. The internet service was offered on long haul flights and in the case of Lufthansa about 1/3 of their long haul fleet was equipped with the hardware noticable by a little hump on top of the fuselage housing the satellite antenna for the internet access. The service was offered by Boeing and was called "Connexion by Boeing" and was of course available on Airbuses. The prices fluctuated during the last 2 years but was approx. 25 USD for a long range flight (later 24 hours...). Unfortunately Boeing ended it´s internet service as of Jan 2007 due to lack of demand. Since the hardware (antennas and satellites) are already in place, the airlines are looking for a company to pick up where Boeing left....

i think the pilots should have internet over the passengers. It gets kinda boring for them

My employer Korean Air offers internet access on certain long range flights, not cheap though about $10 an hour. So far only on the 747's and 777's.

I haven't found any information about internet availability on either Korean or Virgin's website. I believe they were customers of Boeing's "Connexion By Boeing". Now their passengers are without internet as well.

Yes I too was in the chat room when Trijet was on the internet and I thought it was brilliant. I can see airlines having the internet on all flights in the future, which would suit all the businessmen and women. and me too, I may add.

From my latest issue of flight international the following info: Connexion by Boeing had 11 airlines as customers for their internet service at the time of shutdown at the end of 2006. Lufthansa is hopeful to get back online with another provider sometime during this year. A little over 60 of their long haul fleet are equipped with the internet hardware. Worldwide approx. 150 aircraft have the hardware installed. The possible candidate for the new provider is Panasonic. They however demanded approx. 500 aircraft to access their service once they go up online. So now it´s up to the airline negotiators to upgrade their equipment and reduce the number required to launch the service...I´m keeping my fingers crossed.

The RJ-45 is hooked up to the planes LAN and doesn't connect to the internet (at least thats how I understood it). They offer the sprint wireless from what I understand.

The Lear24D that I used to fly back in Oklahoma had internet and satellite phones. Its pretty sweet showing your friends your webcam live at 42,000ft thanks to MSN Messenger. To add my 2 cents about this topic, the opportunity for having WiFi on planes is there, but who wants to pay for it. I cannot remember how much it was to install it on the Lear but i think it was around 15,000 USD. Then the monthly fee was 600 USD? Not too sure but I will check when I have some time this week. The WiFi works great up at altitude and its pretty awesome experience since not too many pilots can say that they have actually broadcasted a live webcam shot in mid air at FL420.
