A "BA" Jumbo that Tony Blair was on for his Holiday, landed at Miami Airport and overran the Main Runway, there was no injuries to any Passengers or Crew, plus there was no damage to the Aircraft.

Heres a link showing some video footage of the Aircraft being towed to the Terminal,

See? It proves my point from before. Tony Blair can "ruff" it out in some obviously clapped out aircraft that only superiors can travel on, so why does GWB need his OWN aircraft. Weird. Anyway, glad to see he was okay. LOL

Edit: It was only leisure travel, I can see maybe why not all the "Bells and whistles" were needed.

Chrisitian.

He needs his own aircraft because he's the most important person in the WORLD. Tony is important, but not that important. Mind you, I'm not saying that the president of the USA needs a whole 747, I too think that's a bit overkill.... but he can't just fly in a plane full of pax. seriously would YOU want to fly in a plane with the most important person (-also the person who the most people want to see dead-) on earth!?
Imagine if just a few pax think the same way and want to get off the flight. imagine if a protester or some drunk guy starts acting out.

Nah the president shouldn't fly on an airline, and frankly I don't think Blair should either.

cheers

President Bush has his own airplane because that is what we've done for every president since Truman. Unless you live (in the) US what our president flies in is really none of your concern.

What is done in the US for the US President is done because of law. Several Presidents have attempted to get authorization to use less expensive aircraft for one reason or another, and they have each been denied because of the US laws. And, there doesn't seem to be any indication that US citizens are interested in changing the existing laws. I suspect that Mr. Blair and other heads-of-state follow the laws of their respective countries.

Okay, sorry if I mis-understood law and your traditions. That's fine. I did read an article while travelling to Lodon once, It did mention all the people it had to carry.

Regards, Christian.

P.S. Do the AF1's really have escape pods on the rear on the under fuselage? (I don't think so, obvious problems could arise!)

Faith or other, it just happens that the student I am working with right now was on that flight and heard the apology of the flight crew to the passengers, explaining why the nose of the plane was stuck in the grass.
Here is how it goes, apparently the lead-off lights from the runway where wrong and convinced the Captain to steer the plane somewhere other then asphalt.
I don't know about you guys but, I was on that runway making that same turn from that same runway at that same airport just two days before them, I was the captain of this flight and guess what, the lead-off lights were just F-I-N-E fine. I did not go in the grass, granted I don't have 200 miles of airplane behind me.
I guess some joker came in the middle of the night and moved them, it must have been a prank!!!
All I know is that someone as got a lot of explaining to do by the time he/she gets back to Heathrow.

Anyone who believes the drivel that Hollywood passes as "real" do yourselves a disservice by giving any of it any creedence at all. Even most of the "based-on-a-true-story" movies are only "based on" the truth - they usually manage to sneak in a whole bunch of "un-truths" to help sell the movie.

QUOTE
Pilot Error Caused Blair's Plane Incident

MIAMI -- A pilot misjudged an airstrip, causing a commercial jet carrying British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his family to overshoot a runway at Miami International Airport, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The captain of British Airways Flight 209 told airport officials that he thought the end of the runway was farther than it actually was, according to the report. He stopped the plane when he saw red lights at the end of the runway and after the jet rolled into an overrun area and knocked over runway lights, the report said.

Officials at MIA denied British Airways' claim that poor lighting was the reason that the 747 overshot the runway. The NTSB found that the lights were working properly and there was no construction that would have affected the landing.

NTSB spokesman Paul Schlamm said a final determination of the landing would be released in about six months.
