Sorry to post this for you NDB MAN, but 216 NDB's in the U.S are being killed. Here's the story....

FAA lists first round of NDB approaches to be canceled
As part of the FAA's effort to cut costs by eliminating redundant navigational aids, the agency has announced it will cancel 216 redundant NDB approaches July 7, saving $19,000 per year for each canceled approach. AOPA provided extensive comments on the list of NDB approaches proposed to be eliminated.

"This is one way the FAA can reduce costs and shift its resources to finance satellite navigation," said Melissa Rudinger, AOPA vice president of regulatory affairs. "AOPA members who were recently surveyed recognized that some NDB approaches were unnecessary and said it would be acceptable to cancel the redundant approaches."

During a public comment period, AOPA provided the FAA with a list of 57 NDB approaches that should be saved because they provided the lowest minimums or because they were important to members in the area. Only one of the approaches that AOPA asked to be retained — the NDB approach to Runway 4 at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky — is slated to be canceled in July. The association is pursuing a response from the FAA about its decision on that approach.

"Rest assured AOPA will work with the FAA to ensure that the agency does not cancel any essential instrument approaches," Rudinger said.

Here is the link to the list of NDB's affected... ENJOY!

That's not cool. LONG LIVE THE NDB
Why couldn't it say "The FAA has composed list of 216 VOR's to be shut down"? That's what it should have said. icon_twisted.gif

LONG LIVE LORAN!!! Yeah baby!!

NDB, you might just be the perfect candidate for an inkblot test.

But, I must admit, I love and appreciate your passion.

I could not agree more. Thank God for overlay approaches. Having the computers in the MD-11 that allow us to do them saves me from having to think during an NDB approach. In 25 years of airline flying I have NEVER done a real, live NDB on a line trip anywhere in the world. But I get thumped with at least one (more if I screw up the first) every time I go to training.

Let's see, was it push the nose or pull the tail........? Aw, to hell with it. Give me a vector to an airport with an ILS approach.

Same way for the nose, opposite for the tail...?!?!
Argg, nothing like an NDB approach in the goo, inverted while holding the yoke with your feet, so that you may have your hands free for that rosary, which will come in handy by the way.
Now, what was the missed approach point? ohhh it's a timed approach...oh well I never started the clock so we'll guess it, wait I see a light, that surely must be uncle Joe's barn a half mile from the runway, let's turn to the right a little more. Are we in North Dakota? because my plate says Arizona on it!!! It's alright, it says it's for an NDB runway 20, so it must be the same. I see the runway, but there is a bunch of cars on it, chop that power extend flaps, let's do a split-S, that way we line up on final....
...To be continued, perhaps...

That sucks, the NDB approach by far is the easiest approach..

I don't know what your smoking hawker but I truly hate the NDB approach all by itself. Now add turbulence, winds greater than 30 kts aloft, a heading indicator that precesses more than 20 degrees after a 1 minute standard rate turn and yeah, you see where I'm going with this, lol.

I don't even know why I have to learn this when lots of them are being shut down. But who knows, I'm probably going to still be teaching it to my students when I'm a CFI. Then and only then can I set back and laugh.
