Can't believe this kind of incident still can happen nowadays, especially after 911:

Does anyone know what the policy is over this - no flight plan lodged for example. Wouldn't jets normally have been scrambled to investigate?

Thanks, VFR rules, I always think in terms of single or twin engined Cessnas or Pipers and don't really associate VFR with jets!!

Do you know if you can fly VFR in a 747?

Yes, but wouldn't it be hard in a Business jet too?

Just like any other plane, you can fly a jet VFR as long as you maintain VFR rules. It is not a good idea, however. Being in a relatively fast-moving plane makes it more difficult to see and avoid other aircraft. I file a IFR flight plan for every single flight I make in a jet. Even on a repositioning flight such as KPHX - KSDL (12 NM apart) I do it. I did, one time, fill in for someone and SIC'd the repositioning of a Westwind in which the PIC did not file a flight plan. Frankly, I didn't really like it. It's just common sense to file, and controllers like to know you are coming, as well as know what you intend to do. But, again, there is nothing that says you can't go without a flight plan.

As for Wolcott, the thief, I looked him up out of curiosity. He holds a commercial pilot ticket and is type rated in the Westwind (IA-JET, and, for those that don't know what it is, that's a Westwind II pictured in my signature). However, the plane he "stole" apparently was a Citation VII (CE-650). I suppose he had some experience flying those, perhaps even taken a SIC course.

At any rate, he's a dummy and highly irresponsible. His flying career is most likely over.

Why would anybody put all of that at risk for a short joy ride?! He was on the right path to the airlines! There is something seriously wrong with this guy's head! I can't imagine what was going through his head. Was he just trying to impress his "homeboys"? I wish this guy would say why he did it! And yes it is strange they would come back to the same field they took off from. That's something I wouldn't imagine happening here in the U.S after 9/11. It just goes to show anything is still possible. But just why oh why? He was really on the right path! Oh well his problem I guess. Do you guys think his "homeboys" are getting a good laugh at him now? They're all free and this guy's in jail. Bottom line what a weird situation.

What makes you think he was headed to the airlines? Believe it or not, not everyone considers an airline job to be the top of the career ladder. I have gone to school (jet recurrent) with a few pilots that got in/back into corporate flying after flying for an airline and they were never happier.

I, personally, have always wanted to be a professional pilot but I have never considered airline flying to be the route I wanted to go.

That said, yes, this dumbass' career is over and more's the better for the rest of us.

Yeah you're right learguy, he might not have been headed for the airlines. Most people that I personally know head that way and I assumed that he was too. But I'll tell you one thing whatever his goal was he's not going to obtain in it now.

Maybe stealing a 7,000,000 dollar jet was his goal. 8) You are right though, he's not going to obtain that "now".

Oh man I'm tired.

I have a question about this jet, how do you know it was 7 million?
Was that the price tag or did it cost an extra buck or two extra? Maybe it was also worth an additional fifty cents. Lets be exact here, lol.
