What is the purpose of torque links (the sideways V) seen on the nose gear of most airplanes? What does it do (or prevent)?

The torque link, also called the "scissors" or " torque knee" is attached to the wheel axle housing at the bottom of the lower strut tube and to the upper gear strut tube at the top.

See this picture . . .

The torque link serves the purpose of keeping the axle housing and wheel/tire straight and in line as the lower tube telescopes in and out of the upper tube. If the torque link was not there, the torque induced by the tire rolling on the runway would cause the lower tube and axle housing to twist and turn inside the upper tube as it telescopes in and out. This would cause the tire to not roll straight
The torque link provides a positive locking mechanical brace to keep the lower strut tube, axle housing, and wheel lined up with the upper gear strut tube and the rest of the airplane.

What Glenn said is perfect. On our plane the same is true. If we ruptured a line (loss of nose wheel steering) or the nose strut loss hyds and compressed, bad day! The scissors still allow the wheel mounts to rotate in a differential turn and not torque the upper main strut. hope that made sense FE
