Does anyone know how much an ILS like MALSR or ALSF-2 CAT3c costs to have installed?

In dollars, pounds, euros, yen or krinkles? And more importantly, who cares?

One of the things that I've noted over the past several months is the large number of questions that don't really belong on a site like this. This place is for aviation enthusiasts. I don't think ,from my perspective anyway, that it's a trivial pursuit site.

Sorry you didn't like my answer. Ask a question like that and I'd be willing to bet that sooner or later someone will roll in on you. Capeche? (Was that meant to sound intimidating?)

First of all, nothing you say could intimidate me. And I really don't care what you think! Secondly, I am an avid aviation enthusiast, however, It has recently become painfully obvious that I'm not talking to the right people. Instead of being decent about it, half of you guys waste time and energy on thoughtless undeserving remarks - so you'll be happy to know I'm signing out of this site for the last time. I don't need to waste my time and negative energy defending myself on a lousy forum like this one. You guys need to re-learn the true meaning of " interpersonal communication."

By the way, whether you care to respond to my remarks makes no difference to me - I would'nt give you the satisfaction of reading it!

If you're still around Saltman, I can tell you that your questions have always seemed to me to be asked, not because you wanted to know the answer, but because you already knew the answer and were both checking to see if anyone was as smart as you, and to let everyone know how smart you were.

Your questions implied a better than average knowledge of aviation but betrayed themselves for the same reason. If you knew enough to ask that question you should know enough to have known the answer.

This is an aviation site, not an economics/financial site. Why would you expect that even the most experienced pilot would know anything about the cost of a major construction project? Ranger's answer was not only honest but valid. No one here has any experience at or interest in the financial or economic aspects of runway construction. BUT, I'll bet you'd get a complete and accurate, detailed description of that runway's features and requirements and how to fly the approach if you were to ask about the AVIATION aspects. But you already knew all of that, didn't you?

I thought about my post to Saltman for quite a few minutes before I finally went ahead and actually posted it. If I offended anyone (Saltman excluded) with it, I do apologize. But I have to say this. Glenn, you articulated my EXACT thoughts. And you did a superb job writing it. He knows a lot more than he is willing to admit. At least on this forum.

"Does anyone know how much an ILS like MALSR or ALSF-2 CAT3c costs to have installed?"

That was his original question that triggered my response. The question alone demonstrates a more than passing knowledge of the system. Stump the dummy and trivial pursuit questions drive me nuts. Just for the hell of it I asked the two guys that I'm flying with Saltman's question. The one in the right seat looked at me and said (drumroll.....) "Who cares?' No kidding.

I know you're still out there, Saltman. You'll lurk and you know it. If you want to participate in these forums as a valued member who is willing to swap ideas and knowledge, it's been my experience that you'll be welcomed with open arms. But don't talk down to people. They see right through you. Capeche?

Great minds think alike.

Ranger, I was a bit insulted by his posts from the beginning, but thought he might get beyond it if we just let him. As long as he didn't directly attack anyone I figured it was worth a try. BUT...

When I read his reply above I said to myself, "Self, here we go! Ego time."

As Capt. Woodrow Call said in Lonesome Dove, "Can't stand ignorance in man, won't tolerate it."

It costs $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 to install an ILS . I believe that is a CAT I, so a CAT III could be more....

Hey Glenn / Ranger / et al … I think you guys may just be a bit more lenient than you need to be on this one.

I’ve tried, on several occasions, to indicate to Mr. Saltman that asking questions was not a problem; but asking frivolous questions was another thing. It had seemed to me that many of the questions he asked were rather easily answered with a little research on his own initiative – but Mr. Saltman wanted someone here to obviate the necessity for him (Mr. Saltman) to have to “look” beyond his own keyboard. That approach to questioning doesn’t sit very well with me. However, if you guys are correct, and he was really trying to demonstrate his own awareness and understanding of aviation through the asking of detailed (although frivolous) questions, then I gave him way too much credit – and perhaps you guys did, too. Why?

The question he asked here (Does anyone know how much an ILS like MALSR or ALSF-2 CAT3c costs to have installed?) doesn’t show that he’s very knowledgeable about Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), at least. An “ILS” like MALSR? … or, like an ALSF-2? He has to be kidding, right? An ILS? No. The MALSR is an approach lighting system. The ALSF-2 is an approach lighting system, also. Neither of them are an ILS system. You would think that before one would ask about how much it would cost to install an ILS, he would find out what an ILS actually is, right?

MALSR. Medium Intensity Approach Light System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights.

ALSF-2. Approach Light System with Sequenced Flashing Lights arranged in an ILS Cat-II configuration.

I’m still trying to figure out what he meant by “ALSF-2 CAT3c.” That makes no sense to me.

I think that once you get to a CAT-II lighting configuration (CAT I lights plus supplemental approach lights), the only things that change are the equipment and signal monitoring and the operator's limits.

To be honest with you, I never really got past the basic question. It was just one too many for me and I'd had enough. So I never really bothered to put the question together in my mind. I felt that based on several of his questions he had/has more than just a passing knowledge of the system. Maybe just enough to be dangerous. But you do raise a good point. Put all of that question together and it doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless you're pimping the locals.

It's Italian. I don't know if it's slang or if it actually means "understand" or "get it'. It's frequently use by the Tony Soprano types who want to sound tough. Erg, my question to him about trying to intimidate. I guess he didn't get that part.

There's gotta be an Italian floating around here someplace.

..float....float...float...
"Capeche?" is a maimedness of the word "capisci?". The meaning, as rightly stated before, is "got it?" and yes, since I' ve heard it in Leone's movies, said by Italo American gangsters, it's pretty intimidatory

Thanks for the replies. I kind of figured that Capeche meant something along those lines. And it's nice to know that Italians DO, in fact, float. Of course, looking at someone like Sophia Loren (Google it if you don't know the name) there's no way all of them would sink.
