What is everyones pet-peeves related to aviation? Come on all, I would like for you all to reply to this, everyone must complain about something and you don't even have to be a pilot to answer this!

However since I am a pilot I will state my pet-peeves from a pilot's perspective first. Perhaps my biggest pet-peeve is UNPROFESSIONAL RADIO COMMUNICATIONS from other pilots. I can't tell you enough how sick I am of hearing..."tower this is cessna 1234U...uhhh, i'm 10 miles south withhhhhhh....ah victor, requesting landing". No offense of course, but radio time on the air is precious time that shouldn't be wasted on pilots who don't know how to talk. My next one is pilots or even worse, flight instructors who complete the preflight inspection in a couple of minutes. These instructors set a bad example to their students and I'm sure you heard this before but with different names, "Like instructor, Like student". This is a recipe for disaster, you could easily miss something like an oil leak, or perhaps something embarrassing such as you forgot to un hook the tie down. In other words, these pilots are becoming more inexperienced and not only threaten their lives but the lives of others.

Now for my casual pet-peeves. My biggest pet-peeve is not getting enough leg room on a long commercial airline flight. Yes, I know first class is an option or that some airlines offer extra leg room but for those of you who don't know me, I'm a college student and I simply can't afford it. Next, I don't like the fact that I can no longer go to the gate as a non passenger, I really enjoyed doing that. Finally my last biggest pet-peeve is the fact that flight training/renting is so **I have a dirty mouth**ing expensive. But thats just the way it is so deal with it. Muahahah.gif

Pilots who see the runway centerline as a taxiway while I'm on short final. Just a friendly reminder pilots:

GET THE HELL OFF OF THE RUNWAY AFTER LANDING!!!!

Ok, I feel much better now.

Thank's Talldude! 8)

Yeah. The phrase "No joy" is NOT in the AIM! If you are on a civilian frequency, you are a geek for using it! icon_rolleyes.gif

Another irritation is people at an uncontrolled field saying..."Oceanside traffic, Cessna 123, 1500ft, entering right base rwy 24, Oceanside traffic".

UGHHH. "Oceanside traffic" is the party to whom you are addressing your initial radio call. It should be finished with the name of the airport only, period, end of transmission! Not repeating who you were speaking to in the first place!

"Oceanside traffic, Cessna 123, 1500ft, entering right base rwy 24, Oceanside" . <----period!

Some good peeves posted so far. I have a few but I'll add just one for now.

A peeve I have is with those pilots who run around the ramp and taxiway with their strobes on, blinding the heck out of everyone else at night. Sure, you want to be seen. But how much are others going to pay close attention to the movement of your plane when they are blinded every time they look in your direction?

And some land, taxi in and shut down the engine(s) and the strobes continue to flash away as the pilot leaves the battery(s) on to do paperwork, etc. for the next 10 minutes.

Turning the strobe lights on is something you do on runway lineup and you turn them off when clearing the runway.

Another is the VFR Cessna/Piper ect who calls the tower saying he's "holding short, ready for takeoff", when in fact they are still in the runup area. When you are ready to go, pull up to the hold short line so others behind you can get into the runup. That is what it's there for!

I agree with you 100%. That is my biggest pet-peeve as well. Although it seems as most of the GA aircraft at my airport taxi with their strobes on while the larger commercial aircraft don't. Personally, I dont taxi with the strobes on, but it gets on my nerves to see it everywhere around me.

I don't know about you, but It also sounds weird when a pilot says "tally ho". When I first started out flying I had no idea what that meant but the more I heard it, I easily became annoyed hearing it for some reason. beatstick.gif

Well I guess I havent been flying long enough to get any pet peeves. Love every second I spend behind that control column, which would work out to be around 140000 seconds.

This really isn't a peeve, but I am curious why I hear so many pilots on the radios say "and" before they transmit? "AND, center this is Mooney 1234 with you at 4,500."

Also I have been encouraged not to say "with you at 6,500." when contacting Center. Be concise; "Oakland Center, N1234 level at 6,500."

Hehe, it depends what they're crying about...On our way out to Puerto Vallarta, the pilots put the flaps to 1 resulting in a loss of lift and that sinking feeling you get inside of you, anyways the two kids a few rows behind me started screaming out, "we're gonna crash!" LMAO!

UNPROFESSIONAL RADIO COMMUNICATIONS

Yeah thats a good one!

I also hate when people cut in on the radio! Like your given instructions and another plane cuts in RIGHT after you receive the instructions not waiting for you to reply, just cause they wanna get their request or whatever in. Not such a big deal I suppose but it still bugs me. (I guess this falls under the category of unprofessional radio communications heh...)

Another peeve of mine is simply cockpit related. The "Sterile Cockpit" rule. As a Part 91 operator, we are not subject to this, but I like to adhere to it on our own level. Ever since I used to literally have to copy a shopping list for groceries while doing a procedure turn on an NDB approach while IMC in a King Air, it seemed appropriate to set my own "ground rules" on this, even if I'm only flying a Cessna 210 now, soon to be an Aerostar as depicted in my signature photo..

In the 210, we rarely fly over 10,000 ft., so within 25 nms of the departure / arrival airport, I don't want to hear about sexual abuse cases against Michael Jackson, football scores or company business from the passengers. But if you see something out of the ordinary that you think I should know about, then by all means, please let me know. If not, please let me concentrate on my work.

A bit anal, I realize.

I get privately peeved at a tower controller who clears me to land leading a heavy jet and then demands I "expedite my approach and turn off at first taxiway". They know how fast a Tiger or Cheetah lands yet they still want to stuff me in ahead of a 737. I do, though, strive to comply.

Another is someone lighting a cigarette in my presence while I'm flying. I smoke, but not while in a plane.

I am not a pilot...yet... but i would have to say the biggest thing that irritates me is when the pilot in command doesnt put the throttles into the full power position fast enough, thus making the take-off roll long and boring.

I know there are limits when taking off...but come on... just throw the throttles up and get the plane off the ground already!

I just love the feeling of accelerating...FAST... down the runway!

What if you are a Military Aircraft on a Civilian Freq? Even better what if you are a Military Rated Aviator and you are on a Sunday Afternoon joyride in a 152?

The AIM isn't the Bible it is the "Airman's Information Manual" so that means it is INFORMATION not law. Tell me where in the FAR it says you can't say "No Joy" and everyone in the aviation world knows what it means so it is adopted radio slang.

icon_mad.gif You aren't a pilot yet, and when you do become one you will realize VERY quickly how no pilot likes anyone else in their cockpit telling them what to do. It is his aircraft, his responsibility, and his decision. Many accidents have happened trying to impress people. Believe me I speak from personal experience.

MY PET PEEVE: Pilots who don't have a little bit more patience with people who are learning how to fly and trying to learn the way of aviation. Just remember "Uhhhhhh" you were a inexperienced aviator at one point in your life and did the same thing. The other thing I hate is Side Chair Quarter Backing another pilot. It is rude to suggest another course of action if you are not in the cockpit with them. When you are flying you make educated decisions that could have consequences so don't sit there and say, "Well if i was there" B.SA. You weren't there and if you were you might have made the same initial instinctive decision, or worse the decision you are coming up with might have led to a far worse out come. Pilots are Type A personalities that strive for perfection, they don't need anyone else to tell them they messed up. Stay in your lane, cockpit, whatever you call it!
