Im 16 and am flying. And my flight instructor says i do etter then most adults to.

Im a basketball player so i have fast reflexes and good video game skills icon_razz.gif.

But there are instances where i would like to be older so that my ego wouldnt take over.

For instance, Im coming in way to fast and high on the landing, and my instructor says its your call. I would probably try to squeeze it out seeing i probably could in a cessna 172. But a real professional with better judgment probable would do a loop around and land.

Now i dont have the balls to do that knowing that guys in the tower and people at the airport are watching.

To tell you the truth so would i, depending on the conditions. If i was approaching a dry, 7,000ft runway than of course i would squeeze in the landing. If however i was approaching a short, wet feild then the go around would be done without hesitation.

Boldness is something only you can control. There is a difference between being confident and being cocky, that line you will have to find by yourself irrelevant of age. With the death of terry patty in the recent weeks, i have relised how dangerous flying can actually be. With many uncontrollable factors that no doubt could kill us, there is no point in creating extra deadly factors simply because of being 'cocky'.

It's not about ego (well, shouldn't be at least). It's about safety and good practice. If you aren't going to make the first 1/3 of the runway or anything looks bad on the approach, go around. I'm sure the tower would rather see you go around then end up in the weeds.

Just remeber this: There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots.

ok. I'm 13 and am starting a PPL course with my school after the summer holidays. I'll see what happens from there. I am also very interested in becoming a pilot! You have to have an ATPL license or a JAA?(I think)license. I have no idea how long it takes, but if you search it with easyjet, they say it costs roughly £100k and 2years(again I think, cant remember) I'm not quite sure about where you can learn the stuff needed for the ATPL license, but after a hard search on the net, the independent newspaper said that the University of Buckinghamshire does a course there.

Hope it helped!

P.S. Any other real world pilot reading this, please tell me more info at: kostas_fines@hotmail.co.uk

Cheers

I am also 16 and flying and am just coming up to my first solo. Over the last few lessons my instructor has told me to make all the "key" decisions (whether to go around or not etc). The main thing is to fly the aircraft safely, that is your first priority, then worry about the radio. At the end of the day you are the person flying the plane, you make the decision which you think is right, don't worry about the people watching you. My advise: If in trouble, stay calm, go around and give it another go.

Good Luck
Morris

I don't know about you guys, but in New Zealand we first have to hold a private pilot [license], then complete a 1 month theory, then at last do 200 hours of flying to get a commercial pilot [license] icon_wink.gif plane.gif

After all that you go and apply at airlines and see which one takes you in. The minimum wage is 200,000 domestic pilot for us NZ'ers and 400,000 commercial. But it all depends on your experience plane.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_cool.gif

Lol I want to be a pilot, im 14 at the minute. Its all about flying hours, leading to higher pay. You start on a rubbish wage but don't let that put you off because after a few years your pay starts to creep upwards.

I've always thought that I'd never follow the airline pilot career path just for the money- there are much easier and cheaper ways to get a reasonably good pay.

Of course, I could start an Airbus vs Boeing argument by saying you're only unhappy with flying because you're on an Airbus. But, I must resist that urge icon_wink.gif Seriousy though, most people on here (especially those who dont fly jets) would love to fly an Airbus.

As for the responsibility thing, how does that affect the pilots on here? I mean, when people say to me 'Ah yes, but you'd have all those lives in your hands' that doesnt put me off at all. Yet I'm the sort of person who'd be really worried about dropping people's food if I was a waiter. But I've never had a passenger who didnt have a commercial pilots license before, so I'm not sure how I'll feel when I have a first time flyer as a pasenger.

Fly as smoothly as possible in order not to have to clean the plane's interior at the end? icon_lol.gif

We've been flying cross-country today with a friend and 2 other people who are not used to flying, one of them had quite a hard time with the relatively high turbulence due to flying low over uneven terrain with quite some wind... She was OK after sitting quiet for a few minutes after landing though, and even didn't have to skip the nice meal that was following icon_thumright.gif

But Kilrah, put just a little bit of wind into the equation and it's not so smooth even when you are higher up when you fly over your part of the world. But it's very pretty though.

You want to be a pilot and ask for help...?
I will be giving you the best suggestion I can,,,
xxx
Become an MD, a dentist or a lawyer, and when you are rich, buy yourself a plane and get a pilot licence.
I speak seriously here...
xxx
I know an MD who owns and flies a rare P-51D Mustang, 1944 vintage...
My dentist owns a SIAI-Marchetti SF-260, acrobatic plane. I presently train him for his Instrument Rating...
I teach him for free. I doubt he gives me much of a discount on my dental care...
I know a lawyer who owns and flies a F4U-7 Corsair, 1945 US Marines aircraft...
He flew it for the TV series "Bah-Baah Blacksheep" and was paid a fortune to takeoff/land in front of cameras,,,
xxx
I am an airline 747 captain and check-pilot/instructor... I dont even own the old 747-200 I fly...
I used to own a Piper L-21C "Grasshopper" 1953 (Super Cub) - sold it last year, could not afford it.
My airline forces me to retire later in the year, as I am too old to transition on the 747-400s replacing the 200s.
By chance, my retirement and social security (total US$ 2,300/mo) will pay for a little house near beach in Brazil.
xxx
When I got hired as pilot 1968, they told me I would be a 747 captain or even B-2707 SST captain 10 years later.
Be a millionaire and have a house at the beach in Malibu...
I was with PanAm from 1968-1991 (layoff from 1974-1986) and forced to fly overseas... retirement = zilch...
After personal chapter 7 bankruptcy and foreclosure of home, disgusted by US airlines, moved to Argentina...
Was good pay (equal to PanAm) until Argentina economy hit the dust in 2002.
My salary (gross income) is now about US$ 3,100 per month...
xxx
And you want to be a pilot - help please...
I would disqualify you, in view of your mental aptitude to be a pilot, with such ideas... icon_rolleyes.gif
You want to be a pilot...? - I told you how... good luck.
xxx
Happy contrails

Hey!

This is my first post in this forum!

My dream is to become pilot for British Airways, I start dreaming since 12 years old (I think) and now I am 14 and half, but I have a problem, the problem is I am deaf icon_sad.gif icon_cry.gif and I know I won't get that job, but I love planes sooooo much icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif and I was interesting what you need to get job. Anyone who know information about how to get a job could e-mail to celestyn@msn.com

Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Honestly, I would devote my attention into achieving the possible and initially doing well at school and university. But deafness does not prevent you from going gliding though! There are plenty people suffering from deafness gliding and even if you are totally deaf, there are ways of training you to become proficient. It will almost certainly take you a little longer to learn (as you will need some additional training to make up for the lack of aural clues), but nothing too significant. A visit to the BGA's website may be worthwhile!

PM

PS. Jane's World Sailplanes and Motor Gliders: Andrew Coates. He is a totally deaf glider pilot - and a pretty good one too! (a member of the LGC, Dunstable).

Although BA is out of the question, you might be interested in what you can achieve:

International Deaf Pilots Association
"It demonstrates to the aviation world that deaf people can become pilots, despite not being able to hear."
http://www.deafpilots.com/

Also, you may even still be able to fly as a commercial pilot in jobs that don't require the use of a radio. You didn't say where you are and your profile has no location (maybe in the UK as you mentioned BA?), but in the USA, the FAA says:
"What types of certificates can a deaf pilot obtain?
A deaf pilot can obtain a student pilot certificate, recreational pilot certificate, private pilot certificate, and, on a limited basis, a commercial pilot certificate; for example, agricultural aircraft operations, banner towing operations, or any operation which does not require radio communication. With new interface technology for in cockpit receipt of weather information and digital communication, additional pilot certificates may be available to deaf pilots in the future.
"

There are about 80 deaf pilots in the USA that are allowed to fly solo in areas where use of radio is not required

Also, http://www.aviationwise.org/student_pilot/...udent_pilot.htm

If you are in the UK, I suggest contacting The British Disabled Flying Association
