I am just in the middle of a very interesting book..and it is called "Fighter Pilots" edited by Jon E. Lewis..
Basically it is the journals from pilots right from 1915....when they flew in their "Longhorn" which was invented by Maurice Farmon right to 1991..the Gulf War..so i find it fascinating so far..as it all about their exploits and has a mixture of sad and funny stories..and i will take it with me next week when i go to Spain and then i will just chill out by the pool and read it ..
The best part was the price as i bought it at a car boot sale and it was only 50p...The price when new £7.99.. icon_thumright.gif

O dear.. I haven't read a book in about a year or more! Although I have to say "Lord Of The Flies" is a good book, read it for GCSE. But to be perfectly honest, I rarely read books. Maybe about 5 years ago I was reading all the time, but now there are such things as movies and my time goes really quickly. I read magazines sometimes. But certainly anything related to aviation I will read.

I recently finished "The Last of the Breed" by Louis Lamour. He is famous for western/cowboy novels but "The Last of the Breed" is set in late 20th century and is about a USAF F-15 pilot, a major, who is an Inuit indian from Alaska. He gets shot down while just inside Soviet airspace on a spying mission. plane.gif They put him on trial and sentence him to ten years in a Siberian prison camp. icon_eek.gif The prison is 3500 miles from anything, in the middle of Siberia, and has a history of no one ever escaping. icon_neutral.gif Well, the Major gets there and it's just like where he grew up. icon_biggrin.gif They tell him trying to escape is useless, no one can survive out there, there's noplace to go, you'll freeze in one day.

NOT!! icon_exclaim.gif

The Major spends three days in the camp gathering things he would need, then off he goes into the frozen Siberian wasteland. He heads east which totally fools the Colonel who is trying to recapture him. icon_wink.gif

Why does he head east?:
Does he out fox the Russian colonel?
How does he survive?

Ooeer.... I haven't read a decent (actually I haven't read ANY book) for over a year and a half, the last book I read was "Harry Potter and The Half-blood Prince" Hehehe... it was a fantastic book though! Like Top V I tend to read magazines, like Kerrang!, Airliner World and Airports of the World. A good mix icon_confused.gif lol.

Hate to bore you guys but I am reading and studying " The Art of Cooking with Herbs & Spices " I just started growing my own and I need this knowledge under my belt. It's too easy to go to the store and purchase Bay Leaves. I should be and am growing my own. All natural is so much better. Sorry it's drab, but it's what I'm reading. plane.gif

it is not boring at all. Chef Keith... growing your own herbs is a good idea and a lot cheaper than buying it at the supermarket.. each to his/her own.. we all have differing tastes..and it is interesting to see what everyone likes to read.. icon_thumright.gif

I have't read any good books lately icon_confused.gif but "Success on the Step: Flying with Kenmore Air" was one of the best Aviation related books I've ever read. The best non-aviation book I've read has to be Sphere. icon_thumright.gif

Well in the past two months I have read: PPL Meterology, PPL Flight Planning and Navigation and PPL Aircraft Technical Knowledge and I passed the exams on them all, yay!

And I'm also trying to read "Words on Wings" its about New Zealanders and flight, its really good.

My all time favourite book would have to be "To Kill a Mockingbird" I loved that book so much, Oh and also "Power of One".

Also does anyone have any recomendations on some classic aviation books?

Thanks Blue! But it is an aviation site and yes it's off topic, but some people think, does that guy have a life. I will tell everyone the story of me being able to taxi out a Dornier DO228 from the hangar a few years ago. It was a birthday gift from a good friend. It makes for a good story. But back to being boring, Culinary Arts training does not go heavily into growing of herbs and spices. And to me it's a shortcut going to the store and buying a jar of Bay Leaves. And who nows how long they have been in the jar.LOL. Every jar of sauce that I produce has my name on it. My reputation as a chef is on the line. I have to do it right. Just like only the best (treacle), ha ha ha goes in my sauces. Thanks again Blue for the support! plane.gif plane.gif

A pretty good one written by a pilot:

"Unfreindly skies" By Captian "X" and renyolds dodson.

I am still reading my way through the "Fighter Pilots".. I think I must be a slow reader..but i am gradually getting through it and am at the story of this pilot flying a Beaufighter in 1940 with RAF Squadron 604.. and all the complications he had to face using radar.which was a new concept and kept on breaking down leaving the pilots with a lot of problems..i.e.." Six crews reported about seventy radar contacts, but all were lost inconclusively..." interesting stuff.. icon_thumright.gif

The most recent book i read was the "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hussaini.. Very inspiring novel, based on true events in his life in his childhood. Must read. Currently i am reading Mahatma Gandhi's Autobiography, "My Experiments on Truth" Another nice read. I would like to reccomend these nice books to all the fellow FL350.com members!
