on jets what do you use to calculate the trim setting for takeoff. could you set the trim so at V2speed you wouldnt have to pull back on the yoke.

In theory, yes you probably could set the trim up in such a way that the airplane would rotate itself at Vr. But that's certainly not what you want it to do. The objective is to allow as much control range as possible. In other words, you want the trim somewhere around the happy medium. That way if anything bad happens, you have as much control option as possible. Make sense?

Weight and balance is the primary determining factor with regards to stab trim setting. What I fly requires that the load be determined and that all of the numbers get put into a computer. Then the crew is sent things like zero fuel weight, takeoff gross weight and their respective CG locations. That is entered into the onboard computers and , barf, out comes the stab trim setting. In older airplanes, before all the gee whiz stuff, we used charts that were a pain to read and to use.
