Boeing announced the launch of the 747-8 (AKA 747ADV) with orders for 10 freighters from Cargolux and 8 from Nippon Cargo Airlines. With additional purchase rights the total order could be for as many as 34 airplanes.

For those of you who thought the A380 killed 747 (espescially Mr. Fouregard and Mr. Leahy) - WRONG.

Yeah, I didn't know about it until I got to work and saw it on the Boeing home page. You get slower as you get older.

New wing, new engines, new flaps, stretched fuselage, new systems, new interior. What else do you want? Airlines base their aircraft purchase decisions on economics, not looks.

Oh yeah. Here is another page with a lot of the same sentiment.

"The 747-800 is 12% more fuel efficient than the A380."

Hmmm...that may very well be a bit more attractive to many airlines as will its not being a 'special needs' a/c. The 747-8 can already serve 210 airports worldwide and has existing fleet commonality.

but besides the wings and the engines whats the difference??

The B747-Adv improvements are:

- FBW (787 cockpit)
- Double slotted inner trailing edge flaps instead of triple slotted (less weight and less noise, less lift also)
- Single slotted outer trailing edge flaps instead of double slotted (see above)
- Slats instead of camber and Krueger leading edge flaps (better perfos at landing and take-off)
- Raked wing tips instead of bend wing tips (less drag)
- Slight redesign of the wing profil (less drag)
- New engines (derated GEnx)
- Span increase to 68.36m from 64.44m
- 11.7ft stretched fuselage for the pax version, 17.3ft for the freighter version.
- news brakes and tires (thoses who are fitted on the B777-300ER)
- sky loft (unoccupied space in the higher lobe, need to modify the air conditioned system heavily)
- new revamped interior
- B777 windows
(...)

How [doubtful] to me!

I agree; To most people it will just be another 747.......

Sorry if its somewhere else but does anyone know the approximate rollout dates (OR an indication of completion icon_razz.gif) of the 787 or 747-8?

I think it looks nice. I can't wait to see one. I can't wait to fly on one of these or a 787.
