QUOTE
A body has been discovered inside a wheel well of a Delta Air Lines plane after it landed in Tokyo from New York.

The body of the apparent stowaway was clad only in a long-sleeved, plaid shirt and jeans, police at Narita International Airport said on Monday.

A mechanic found the body lying inside the landing gear compartment of the Boeing 777-200 during maintenance after Delta Flight 59 landed on Sunday night, police official Zenjiro Watanabe said.

"All we know is that he must have sneaked in just before departure, because it is impossible for him to enter the storage during flight," Watanabe said, adding that police are trying to identify the man.

He had no visible injuries except frostbite and may have died of hypothermia, Watanabe said. The temperature in that part of the plane falls to about minus 58 degrees (minus 50C) during the long flight.

Police were investigating the case both as an accident and a possible crime, Watanabe said.

Delta officials were not immediately available for comment.

Similar cases have occurred in the past. In 2007, a man was found dead in the nose gear wheel well on a United Airlines flight that arrived in San Francisco from Shanghai. He, too, was thought to be a stowaway.

How sad that this person died. He never stood a chance but the worrying thing about all this is . How did he manage to get past security?. What if he had a bomb on his person.? The plane would have been blown up. They need to take a long hard look at how he managed to get anywhere near the plane far less actually be on the landing gear part. icon_exclaim.gif

Wonder where that 777 came in from before heading off to Narita. Having looked up in the gear wells of a 777, I'm always surprised at the amounts of space, I could see him perhaps sneaking in prior to the previous departure to New York, passing away during that flight (hopefully after passing out from hypoxia), and remaining in one position throughout the turn in NY.

I'm not familiar with a 777 walkaround or the position of the body, but I can't imagine a place where he would have been that could easily be seen by the average Joe doing his walkaround.

Sad story indeed. These people are desperate to achieve something better in life and aren't even aware of what happens to them at high altutudes.

It does look rather huge, but once the gear is retracted you'd be amazed about how little space there is left. And I wouldn't want to get too close to those huge hydraulic dampers either. I'd loose that fight for sure...
